The Monthly Fiber Arts Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love yarn and fabric of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced fiber artists and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!
You are busy this morning, I haven’t had coffee yet!

I did not know this thread existed. Sweet!
I love a good yarn!
We just started it this summer. I think traffic will pick up now, with colder weather coming and less time in the garden and more crafting! Jump right in. Let me know if you want to be added to the monthly ping list.
Thanks for posting the thread! Working on the first cup of coffee & still thinking it’s Friday for some reason.
Question for everybody .... I just found out a week or so ago that someone ‘new’ to our family (married a family widower) is going to be a grandma for the first time. She’s a special person - I did a “Tree of Love” afghan for a wedding gift and now I’d like to do a baby blanket - something nice enough for a Christening blanket/heirloom quality.
While I have a lot of good patterns including “The Best of Terry Kimbrough” Baby Afghans book & have made about 6 of them, I’m looking for something new (to me). If you have a favorite pattern and/or suggestions for a really beautiful baby blanket, please post them to me. The grandchild is due in March so I have some time ... but time tends to slip away quickly!
Thanks, ~Q
Next Saturday, our alpaca farm is having its Annual Fall Festival - people come out to visit the animals and I set up a needle felting table in the fiber studio. People will try their hands at needle felting by making small autumn leaves with fiber and little cookie cutters. I used to only do demonstrations, but people have much more fun if they can actually play with the fiber themselves. They put the fiber inside of the cookie cutter (and their fingers on the outside!) and just stab stab until a leaf forms. It’s so easy to teach.
Lots of folks have told me how pleasurable it is to needle felt - the quick stabbing motion and that nice satisfying “crunch” you get when the needle meets the fiber. I find it to be a very soothing craft in these crazy times.
I’ve never done needle felting but it sounds therapeutic — like popping bubble wrap.
Can I be added?
fabric store. all day!
“Ive never done needle felting but it sounds therapeutic like popping bubble wrap.”
Oh, it is, it is. Give it a try. Startup expense and learning time are minimal; lots of good YouTube video instructions.
I have needle-felted designs over pulls or holes in sweaters and scarves and have had people offer to buy them off my back.
I do quilting, and there is one method that uses felted wool for some designs. Not bed quilts so much, but table runners and other decor. It seems that the edges don’t fray so there’s no need to turn under to applique. Would that be the same thing?
“It seems that the edges dont fray so theres no need to turn under to applique. Would that be the same thing?”
A felted applique doesn’t need the edges turned under - most people just tack or blanket-stitch them on. I wouldn’t run such a thing through the washing machine, but felted appliques won’t fray with normal use.
Yes. I like the look of felted wool with blanket stitch. And I enjoy doing blanket stitch.
I remember back in the ‘50s - maybe early ‘60s - there was a popular fashion for jackets. Let’s see if I can remember ... Flannel jacket heavily appliqued with felt Mexican motifs and blanket stitched all around. I wanted one so much!
That does sound very therapeutic!
You’re in! :)
