A Massachusetts construction workers love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old mans heart to stop,
The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals, principally electrolytes.

With a splash of sal ammoniac on the side.
Should’ve taken some Brawndo. It’s got electrolytes.
Yikes. I don’t see how anyone could think they could survive on that stuff.
i wonder if Kim Jong eats a lot of black lickorish
Charlie Chaplin had to go to the Hospital after eating that black licorice Boot
Hopefully this doesnt make them ban the damn stuff. Even water can kill if someone drinks too much of it (Im not talking about drowning but rather water poisoning). Anything can be lethal in sufficient doses.
Yeah! I wanna party with that fella!

Hey, Di-hydrogen Oxide is dangerous stuff! Just ask a college student!

.
Brawndo, it’s good for you.
They should try some hakarl followed by a shot of Brennivin.
Are, you mean.
Ya beat me to it!
I like licorice but rarely eat it. I’m pretty skeptical of this story, though. If 2 oz a day for 2 weeks was really this lethal, I’m guessing licorice poisoning would be a far more common thing. Licorice isn’t hugely popular but there must be thousands of people worldwide who have a daily licorice habit. (Hell there are thousands of people with every kind of food habit). If licorice eaters were regularly dropping dead from regular consumption of this food, I think we’d have heard more of it
The Gold Rush
The scene where The Lone Prospector and Big Jim have a boot for supper took three days and 63 takes to suit director Charles Chaplin. The boot was made of licorice, and Chaplin was later rushed to a hospital suffering insulin shock. The boot was made by the firm of Hillaby’s in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England; Pontefract is famous for growing licorice and making it into “Pomfret [Pontefract] Cakes”.
