NBA legend Michael Jordan is launching a new NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace, the only black driver on stock car racing's top circuit and the sport's most coveted free agent.
Jordan, currently the majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, announced Monday that he is starting the one-car team along with veteran driver Denny Hamlin.
'Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few black owners,' Jordan said in his statement. 'The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more.'
The partnership was announced Monday night in coordinated social media posts by Jordan and Hamlin, with Wallace adding his own comment. The posts showed a picture of Jordan alongside a firesuit-clad Hamlin in a motorhome at a race track.

No, not MJ, too! Lost some respect for MJ today.
Patrick was a good driver, never met the hype but she finished a lot of races in moderate fashion compared to a lot of other drivers.
If I buy an NBA team, and hire more whites, (”in a bid to diversify the sport”), everything would be AOK?
Too funny.
This isn't his first foray into team ownership, though.
From 2004 to 2014 the Michael Jordan Motorports Racing Team fielded a couple bikes in AMA Superbike and Superstock. His riders fared quite well, but they were not quite quick enough to beat the factory teams.
After being a rabid fan since the 1950's, I'm proud to have canceled NASCAR from my personal universe...
Hmmm... Does that "cancelation" qualify me as "woke"???
MJ is trying to sell apparel and shoes to white people, too. I can see why he was advised to give NASCAR a shot in this racialist atmosphere.
RACIST!
MJ had a AMA Superbike team for almost 10 years. After several years and a rule change he finally got a couple of podium finishes, but never won a race.
That hobby bike team only cost him $1 million a year, which is chump change compared to what it costs to run a NOOSECAR team.
Indeed. MJ may have been great at basketball, but the phrase “A fool & his money are soon parted” comes to mind!
Ask Troy Aikman how starting a new NASCAR team worked out. Look forward to your 25th average finishing position, Bubba. I won’t be watching.
Good. Level playing field. Was that so hard? Competition is wonderful and slinging guilt is for losers pretending to be victims. Win some lose some and celebrate it all.
I am confused:
IF it is a one car team with Hamlin-—what is Bubba going to be driving???
Big whup. Brad Daugherty’s been a team owner for years. Why don’t they talk about him? Isn’t he black enough?
if mj has money to burn i suggest he go into horse racing and use black jockeys, trainers and horses..
A fool and his money are soon parted
“Does literally everything have to be about race with these people? “

Though they make noises about being proud to be black or non-white, they are ashamed of their race’s colour.
If they were proud, truly proud, they’d be pushing for their schools and teachers/parents/everyone to push their offspring to excel in all areas.
You do have blacks and non-whites who are comfortable in their skin and want to be the best in their fields of medicine, history, law, and the such. They teach their children to be the best.
Others, make money, sure. They have no desire, though, to push their children to learn. They do not want their children to be any better than themselves. There are these types of parents in all races.
Unfortunately, the black race has been coddled by their black-poverty-pimps.
