One thing I've never understood about BMI is that it is related to the square of the height. If you take the "ideal" human height and weight and increase the height by 10%, I would expect width and thickness to increase by 10% also for a total weight increase of 33%. But the BMI only allows 21%. That means tall people have to be bean poles to hit the desired weight.

Look at a 100 Meter sprinter and a 5000 meter runner. Their BMI is very different but neither has any fat. The decathlon athlete has an even higher BMI with no fat.

BMI is indexed to a world-wide average. You are being compared to a Somali as well as a German.
If half of Americans are "overweight" then basic statistic al evaluations dictate that you must re-evaluate your sample base to get rid of bias.
Americans should be compared to their peers i.e. North Americans or first world samples because 98% of the world is overweight compared to Somalis.
