I have had computers die, and I just take the old computer and new computer to a computer shop and have them transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new computer’s hard drive. Your old computer does not have to be working to pull the data off your hard drive.
Each time this happens the shop gives me back the old hard drive separate from the computer, so I assume they plug the hard drive into the new computer somehow.
I think in the last “Q” thread someone posted an Amazon link for the “stuff” to perform such a task, but it was way above my ability to understand, which is why I started the paragraph with “I think.”

My favorite trick is to slave the old hard-drive to the new one.
With the advent of 8-Core processors and 64-bit systems, many desktops can take up to 4 slaves.
My latest has 3T primary (operating) drive and two [1/2T] slave drives from my previous desktops.
Buy a cable, plug & play.
No deleting, no ghosting, and you get to keep all that data in a secure place.
Thanks. I had not heard of the transfer to new computer before. I had a friend that recovered some files for me on a old “dead” computer and put them on a disc. He’s not here now though, so I’m hoping to find someone I can trust to give me a disc or something.
I don’t necessarily need all the files to be on my new computer, just some of them.
