Warren Buffett's Duracell sues Energizer over battery life claims

Duracell, the battery unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., sued the maker of Energizer batteries on Tuesday, accusing it falsely advertising that its Energizer MAX batteries last up to 50% longer than other alkaline batteries.

The lawsuit follows Energizer Holdings Inc.’s own lawsuit last Sept. 30 accusing Duracell of falsely advertising that its then-new “Optimum” batteries were more powerful and lasted longer than rival batteries.

Duracell filed counterclaims alleging false advertising in that case. It is now accusing Energizer of having “doubled down” by claiming on battery packages, on printed coupons and through in-store advertising that MAX batteries are “up to 50% longer lasting than basic alkaline in demanding devices.”

Energizer is attempting “to confuse and mislead consumers regarding the comparative benefits of Energizer’s MAX batteries relative to other alkaline batteries,” including Duracell’s Coppertop batteries, Duracell’s complaint said. …

Sounds like a b.s. lawsuit. “Up to 50% longer”? If the battery lasts 0.004% longer, that’s UP TO 50%. Such claims are often considered commercial boasting.

It all depends on load, rate of current drain, initial and final voltage. Lots of ways to fudge the numbers.

Just a little savings message. Costco Kirkland batteries are made by Duracell.

AC Delco is better than both, less than a quarter each and lasts just as long as the big brands from what I can tell: https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-superpilas-alcalinas-AAA-AC274/dp/B00FF8KQJC/

My expeience with Duracell is that for the past few years nearly every AA I’ve used leaks. They never used to do that. I stopped buying them.

Simply place the amp-hour curves on the packaging. This will never happen, the “bunny” is more interesting.

Well, Buffett has owned them for the past four years.

I’m having problems with my last few batches of Kirkland batteries leaking prematurely. Long before the use-by date, in low-stress environments, like remote controls in a climate controlled house.

***My experience with Duracell is that for the past few years nearly every AA I’ve used leaks.***

I’ve noticed the same thing. A pack of AAA batteries all leaked in the package before I could use them. I immediately went through the house and pulled out every Duracell. They all had leaked.

AC Delco is better than both

Not in my experience. I bought a large package once at Menards, and several of them actually had visible acid/rust damage that I found only after opening the package. Longevity was poor. Since then, I assumed that AC/Delco sold the rights to the name for consumer dry cells to some 3rd rate operation.

Bat-wars. Or, how to throw massive amounts of money and superior court time down the lawyer drain for the stupidest reasons.

You guys duke it out in court so your overpriced batteries can be even more expensive. In the meantime, I’ll get a 72 pack of Kirkland batteries for a fraction of what 72 Duracell or Eveready batteries cost.

Did you know that you can recharge alkaline batteries?

I’ve been using the same pair of Duracell batteries in my radio on charging them every day now for about a year and a half

The trick is you have to have a voltmeter as they charge very very quickly feel good from 1.4 to 1.6 in about 15 minutes

“Costco Kirkland batteries are made by Duracell.”

unfortunately, that doesn’t mean they’re as good as the actual thing ... i’ve tried to use several off-brand batteries, like the Maker’s Mark batteries from Sam’s Warehouse and Amazon branded batteries and they’ve all been completely worthless and a waste of money ...

A number of people who make their living using or servicing electronic instrumentation refer to Duracell as “Duraleak”. The damn things seem to be much more prone to leakage than the other top brands.

I won’t buy Duracell batteries for any reason after bad experiences of my own. I don’t think they are nearly as good as when they were still Mallory.

None of this has to do with the specifics of the article, but what’s a thread on FR without a bit of topic drift?

“Simply place the amp-hour curves on the packaging.”

LOL! Do you really think the average “Ma and Pa Kettle” consumer has a clue what an amp hour is? And you can forget them knowing how to interpret a discharge curve.

Ditto that. Same extensive experience. Sometimes I have to drill the battery and yank with an easy-out to see the Mfr. - Make? Duracell. Lost a lot of maglites. We just get Amazon Basics now. They don't leak. Work just fine. No stats - just experience. You're not alone.

;-)
