Saying Goodbye To Ed Walker

Ed Walker spent 65 years on the radio. His last program was unlike any other.

Happy Sunday all...

It’s quite the mix of shows tonight...looks like the theme is the 75th anniversary of VJ day...am looking forward to Doctor Kildare and maybe Arch Oboler’s Plays...

How’s it been?

Can’t believe this is still on. I remember years ago, during fundraisier week, this high brow woman called in and complained about the ‘Hick Music’ they played on Sundays - Stained Glass Bluegrass broadcast is now a thing of the past.

Still on, OTR is timeless, but we're suffering through a SJW host. Ed Walker he is not. I remember the bluegrass. They would play it a lot on the weekends.

All’s well up here Gina. Smoked a brisket flat and I’ve been stuffing my face with it. You?

How’s it going?

The tropical storm on the east coast was mostly heavy rain for us.

Mmmmm! Sounds good!

We’re fine down here. Just hot and getting ready to smoke some baby back ribs on the grill. I cheated and bought Walmart deli sides to go with it. It’s been a very busy week and will be another one coming up.

Hi, Viking!

Yeah, my sister and her husband took Mom to O.C. for a week for her 80th birthday party and said that all they saw was a lot of rain and wind, but they were five miles inland. Closer in to the beach they apparently had a few trees down and the like. They just dropped her off back home late last evening and not long after she got there, the family dog passed away. A shame, she was my little buddy. She would always come in and curl up at my feet in the evenings when I was on my laptop. She also knew I was a pushover to get a free snack from. I'll miss her this coming Christmas.

As far as I go, I still have a knot on my head from hitting it a month ago, so much so that my doc put me on Norco for as-needed pain management. Then, a couple weeks back, our grandson was spending a couple of nights with us and all three of us were fighting a stomach bug, and I started noticing that all of the sinks and toilets were draining slower and slower, then were acting almost completely clogged. I got a couple bottles of main line cleaner, thinking that would open them up overnight, but they were even worse the next morning. I was going to call the county water authority when Connie brought me the home inspection paperwork, and I discovered we have A SEPTIC TANK. It had been buried for so long, it took the septic guys almost an hour to find it, and they had to bring in a backhoe to tear out a holly bush and dig it out. It had gone unpumped for at least seven years and the septic guys said the main line was backed up all the way into the house. Eeewwwww. That set me out a few hundred dollars I hadn't planned on spending, but I learned that we have to call them every three years now to keep it from happening again.

Then more good news: I got alerted to the fact that the brothers who managed our county lake a few minutes from here were given their 30 days' notice early this week (allegedly due to low profit), and rumor has it they are going to permanently close the lake and drain it. It's been a community gathering point for decades. They'd made so many improvements there in their three years, had more on the table, were running water taxis to primitive island campsites, had a new kids' playground built, the county sheriff's department had been volunteering their time and resources to keep the grassy areas mowed and took care of security, it's where a bunch of us would buy into fishing tourneys, and everyone within 25 miles would come out for family and sportsmen-friendly days out on the weekends. Well, a petition has been started to at least get a full hearing on it and a fund has been kick started. There is some sort of Boss Hogg political scumbaggery afoot, methinks. Just need to follow the money, because 175 acres of drained lake won't just sit there unused for long.

Wow! Other than Happy Birthday to your Mom, that’s some bummer stuff, Viking. I’m so sorry about y’all’s pup. It’s a heart breaker when our dear pets go.

The septic story has too many potential punchlines. I won’t touch it, but I’m glad you got it figured out. :-D

Sorry about the negative news. I heard OC was beaten up a little.

The lake thing seems strange.

Vision - yeah, there's still a drip-drip-drip of info about the lake coming out, and I'm sure there's more to it than is being said, but by any yardstick, it seems like there's something a little 'off' about it all.

Gina, O.C. is Ocean City, MD. The Maryland coast, right on the Atlantic. Huge spit of island between the ocean and various bays. Beautiful there. And also a tourist trap packed shoulder to shoulder between Memorial and Labor Days, at least half with college kids working summer jobs by day and partying at night. I learned to schedule my visits just outside of those holidays, not only because the crowds thin out, but the lodging rates all go down and it's still nice and warm and everything is still open in full swing. Google it, there's too much to cover, but there's a Boardwalk, piers galore, more seafood than you could ever eat, an amusement park, a thousand things to see and do. It's part of a chain of beaches - Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware National Seashore to the north and Assateague (VA) National Seashore to the south. You could get lost for weeks exploring all the hidden (and not so hidden) places along the coast there.

Yes, I just didn’t know what O.C. stood for, but I’ve heard of Ocean City. Thanks, Viking.
