First off, I don’t recommend carrying a defensive handgun
in a pocket, but in a holster, same place, every day, dressing for concealment, and training frequently to draw and fire to a high degree of proficiency. Like your life depended on it.
If you insist upon a wheel gun the Charter Arms “Bulldog”
with a bobbed hammer, 3” barrel, in .44 SPECIAL is THE way to go...no two ways about it.

That's the Ruger LCR. That particular one is the 22LR caliber. There are several other calibers. Have never shot any of them, but would like to try some rentals at a range.

Revolvers that shoot the .40 S&W round have to use a moon clip since the round is designed for a semi-auto, it’s a rimless cartridge. For a pocket pistol I’d forget about stopping power and concentrate upon small. Stopping power is overrated in a pistol anyway, no pistol round really has “stopping power”. If I was planning on pocket carry I’d much rather have a 25 or 32 ACP that fit in my pocket than a 40 that I had to wrestle with and made me look like John Holmes at a wet T-shirt contest.

Now your talking, pardner. Except I’d go for a 3” model 24 in a high ride foward cant holster slightly behind the hip. I have some 44 handloads with 210 gr. hollowpoints that travel out of the 3” tube right at 1100 fps. Stout but not unmanageable at all. A 3” 624 has a lot to give in the way of service. I have one of each for CC, the 624 has been professionally dehorned.l

Well said and a very good point IO was curious about also.

Reloading is going to be a messy issue and not smooth. You would need to have several speed loaders and six moon clips to make sure you are good. And if you need more now you have to load the moon clips again before you can reload the firearm. Not worth it. .38 with +P and you are good to go no matter the situation and even if you do not have speed loaders.

Well, S&W 24/624, are the second and third ways about it, of course. The extra round in the cylinder is a great plus...but the extra pound or more, makes them a P.I.T.A.to carry (but with more manageable recoil at nitty gritty time)...Point is, for a wheel gun, the .44Spl. is the cartridge to go with for those that can handle it. (my 5’2” 120lb. wife has no problem with it at all). All 3 platforms are functionally equivalent and formidable.

At 6’3”, 240 lb., I don’t find the 3” m.24 a PITA to carry. Mostly not even aware of it. Became enamoured with the .44 spcl as it was my granpappy’s favorite. Been messing around with a 4” m.25 in lc and thinking about getting a 3”. The 45 LC hand loaded and in the N frame is a potent solution. I can carry it with a couple of speedloaders and not be disadvantaged. I don’t go where I would need a fifteen shot auto with 4 spare mags. If I did I wouldnt be armed with only a pistol. The fact is one has to find out what works for them. Then practice, practice, practice and live with it. Peace be with you, brother.
