‘Whitening’ creams undergo a makeover but colorism persists

Following decades of pervasive advertising promoting the power of lighter skin, a rebranding is hitting shelves. But it’s unlikely that fresh marketing by the world’s biggest brands in beauty will reverse deeply rooted prejudices around “colorism,” the idea that fair skin is better than dark skin.
Unilever said it is removing words like “fair,” “white” and “light” from its marketing and packaging, explaining the decision as a move toward “a more inclusive vision of beauty.” Unilever’s Indian subsidiary, Hindustan Unilever Limited, said the Fair & Lovely brand will instead be known as “Glow & Lovely.”

The Twilight Zone episode in which Donna Douglas is cast as the Ugly Duckling is nearing. TV ads have become a source of discussion among many and not only in what is now the symbol of beauty but in other areas of society. White men are the home burglars, the dorks, the useless while others play the roles of leaders and represent the good in society. Brainwashing at its finest. We see more ads celebrating homosexuality including images from the Census than we do with pretty white women. Imagine if there was a contemporary version of the Farrah Fawcett Noxzema or Swedish Bikini Team TV ad? But everything else is now permitted or so it seems.

I agree but with regard to whitening creams it does pervade a toxic cycle of self-loathing among certain cultures in India, etc...

It’s always been funny to me that you can go into a drug store, and see entire aisles devoted to straightening hair and lightening skin, and other aisles to curling hair and tanning skin.

Not the same comparison sorry. It’s not embedded into the cultural DNA and psyche the same way whitening products are in India and other parts of Asia.

No it is GREAT to be white. White is beautiful... Whites have created the internet and the automobile and the airplane and found how to source electricity and a million other things that without whites would not exist.
Anybody feel free to add to the list.
A large number of those things will also have been created by Americans.
That’s nothing wrong being proud of what Caucasian men have invented and created. As long as you don’t look down on other races what’s the big deal?
The black is beautiful movement looks down on whites.
