You essentially answered a question I had. When traveling by car, do CCW holders ignore the law in prohibited states (such as CA) or do they comply and risk being a victim?

You should know the laws for the state you are driving in/through.

Car is a little different. You do risk being thrown in jail in sh**holes like New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts. That said, if you aren’t doing anything wrong, it’s unlikely you’ll be searched. There’s always that outlier, though, and you need to be prepared to be a guest of these jurisdictions, or better yet, avoid them completely.
