A systematic effort was made after the war to tidy up the battlefields and move soldiers' remains from field burials to formal graveyards. In a few cases, identifiable remains were sent home, but in general, union dead were moved to national cemeteries and the confederate dead in the eastern theater were taken to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond and Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg. There are of course many smaller cemeteries that took some, but the mass confederate reinternments went to Richmond and Petersburg. In theory, a confederate should only be at Gettysburg today if he was missed at the time. There are, of course, still undiscovered remains out on the battlefield. If I recall correctly, the estimate at Gettysburg is about 600 dead who were never buried, but that's a very rough guess.

In general at Civil War cemeteries, the remains of men who died on the field are marked as "unknown." Graves that are identified usually contain men who lived long enough to get to an aid station or hospital where someone had the time to take names and keep a list. Senior officers got more attention, though some of them went missing as well. At Gettysburg, for example, I don't believe that Richard Garnett's remains were ever identified, and he could not have been killed at a more conspicuous place. If a cannonball killed him, there might not have been much left to identify.

“how can be be a nephew of Robert Lee when Robert Lee died in 1870?”

My wife of 47 years died in 2018, at 73. Her grandfather was born before the Civil War. When her mother was born, her mother’s father was 72. (by his 2nd wife)

Very impressive for an old chap.
Can I have some of the tablets he was taking? :)

Smile.

I never knew him, but his daughter, my mother-in-law, lied about her age her whole life. She married a much younger man and only the Social Security Administration got it right. Smile.

She was a good looking red head, judging from early pictures. She outlived my father-in-law, who was 10 years younger than her. (he was only 16 years older than I was)

If this guy is only a ‘distant’ relative, and a ‘nephew’ he is not a descendent...

What makes the opinion of this alleged descendant more relevant than any other opinion? Zero. Unless that is you cannot just reason and think logically and need the cache of some “celebrity” to sway your decision for you. THAT - the latter - is 100% what all the Dims do, either in trying to impress the sheeple they are on the “correct” side, or trying to make up their own emotion-and-image run mind.

Apparently Secretary of State William H. Seward had given Lee's application to a friend as a souvenir, and the State Department had pigeonholed the oath.

FYI in referencing William Seward, there is irony with the Cancel Culture Outragers!

First, in the same conspiracy that had the President, Abraham Lincoln, assassinated, Lewis Powell went to Seward's home, that same night, where Seward was confined for illness, made entry into his bedroom and stabbed him 5 times. In the attack, Powell also injured 2 of Seward's sons, a soldier and a messenger before escaping. That all of them survived the night and that Seward stayed Secretary of State through Andrew Johnson's term is what has his statue now standing in the Alaska State Capital of Juneau.

Now as Number Two, the rampant Cancel Culture of Dis-history, the same ones in favor of removing the multiple statues of General Lee, also has a band wanting to do the same for Secretary Seward's new 2016 statue in Juneau. The 'reason'(?), he was a colonialist in leading the effort for buying Alaska from Russia and failing to consult the native inhabitants while doing so. Left unsaid and unconsidered by these a-historical ignoramuses is what the native treatment would have been like under Imperial Russia, a land of nobles and serfs!

While their 'change.org' petition does not appear to be getting much momentum, it does go to PROVE that there is a given percentage of people who love to virtue signal! The important thing to remember is that these activist are given an immediate respectibility by their fellow travelers in the [unbiased] MSM! RESIST THEM!

If he’s a distant nephew of General Lee, he isn’t a descendant of General Lee.

Reverend I. M. Soholierthanthou. The virtue-signaling is strong with this one.

Well, I am a decedent of General Lee (I really am!) and honor his memory. All this statue removing is silly and will not end till all the founding fathers are removed as well and they wipe out our history!

Since Robert E. Lee was married to a descendant of Martha Washington, the nephew probably thinks he is a descendant of George Washington too.

Find the one contrarian a-hole in the lineage to justify the iconoclasm, ignore the scores of proud descendants.

One of the places his statue definitely belongs is Antietam.

When did a turncoat nephew become a "descendant?"

But what a shameful & contemptible representative of a truly noble family!!

Ladies’ Memorial Associations across the South formed the resolution to raise money, find helpful connections, disinter the Confederate soldiers, and re-bury them in Southern cemeteries. It was clear the Confederate dead were not welcome in the Gettysburg National Cemetery, so the ladies decided to bring their fallen back to Southern soil.
