You did brush firefighting?

You’ve got a pair of hangers. Man... You earned some serious respect from me, especially on top of military service.

My husband has been trying to find work on the rails as a mechanic, but Chicago’s already locked in. Things here are worse than ever, and we’re trying to get out. Too poor to stay, too poor to leave; we’re stuck.

WTF??? These cops aren’t in the military, and they’re disabled. They might also be getting Social Security disability and Medicare if they filed for it when they retired. Depending on their disability, they could have been eligible for it. The politicians of Chicago aren’t doctors. If a doctor says these guys can’t work...the City can’t force the issue or penalize them if they refuse. If they need someone to man the phones, pull in some of those politicians who sit on their asses doing nothing, but get a paycheck.

Wasn’t 62 17 years ago. He would have been 45. Sorry but I stand by my opinion. I have strong opinions on it. Have strong history on living in difficulties and still performing my job.

"Gee, I'd love to see the actual wording of the state law and the retiree's retirement/separation verbiage. "

New York State employees and other city and county government employees belong to the same pension plan. Once you retire, you can not work for any other government agency in the State because it's against the law to double dip (State pension and government salary). New York State politicians were doing it, but it was eventually outlawed. I can't see it being allowed in Illinois or any other State. Are they suggesting that these disabled cops forego their pension checks, and go back on the payroll? I've never heard of that ever happening, and I'd say it would probably be illegal.

"So, he said, the least they can do is cover for a few shifts while paying for their own moves and living expenses while having to fill in."

Yeah, screw that.

"and letting prisoners out of jail because of “covid”

Well, then there's the answer to their problem. Get some of those ex-cons to handle the call center. They're probably not doing anything anyway except selling drugs, looting, and shooting it up.

"One guy retired 17 yrs ago. He is 62."

He could already be on Medicare and Social Security disability, if his disability warranted it. Once he turns 65, he'll automatically be rolled over into regular social security.

Under normal circumstances, if you're injured, sick, etc., and can't work full-duty, you can be put on desk duty for a certain period of time (so many weeks). It is usually only allowed for specific length of time, and after that time has elapsed, you either have to return to full-duty, or go back out until you can come back full-duty. Most civil service jobs require you to return to full-duty within a year of the date you went out. If you can't return to full-duty within that time, you are discharged due to disability. You have to specifically be cleared by a doctor that you are 100% fit for duty before you can return to full-duty.

My Dad worked for the New York Central Railroad out of Rochester, New York for over 50 years. Had a 4th grade education. Started as a laborer, and retired as a Track Foreman. He loved the railroad. And thank you for your service. My brother was a Vietnam Vet...U.S. Army, 25th Division, 4th Battalion, (Mech) 23rd Infantry...Cu Chi...'66-67'.

My youngest son, now 53, worked as a dispatcher for a small railroad in Coopertown, New York for a couple of years. He then got a job working as a dispatcher for Conrail in Selkirk, NY. He stayed with it for about 8 years, but left when they merged with Norfolk Southern and CSX. Although he loved trains, he just couldn't see himself working that job for the rest of his life. It was too stressful, especially after the merger.

North Chicago is a veritable shithole.. largely black, blighted and thoroughly corrupt.

North Chicago is a blighted, black-run crap of a town located outside the gate of Great Lakes Naval base. It’s a miserable, gray, depressing mess of a “community.”

Yep... that stretch coming through North Chicago out of Great Lakes toward what was supposed to be the Amstutz Expressway is a real prize winner.

Whoa! Was John Paul Jones your Company Commander? (J/K)

Hap Arnold was mine, at Lackland AFB, TX, in 1967. 😁🤗🤣 I told my son I didn’t want him to put up with the same abuse I did, so if he wanted to go in, to only do it as an officer. He took my advice. 👍 Notice my tagline.

I was 22 miles west of Cu Chi. I was an air traffic controller. Pretty stressful too, but not like those guys out in the field.

I am afraid this will happen to my brothers and sisters of the NYPD. The rush to retire may cause the city to invoke a law that allows it to refuse to let cops retire.

Is such a law in their contract? I mean there are 38k nypd cops not 50 like North Chicago.

Agree the concept is nuts. Forcing someone back after 17 years.
