Dear Faculty, in the interest of learning for life, and to promote a deeper understanding of our own socialization in America, the Multicultural Committee would like to promote an opportunity to grow. All we ask is that you watch a documentary on Netflix called 13th and engage in honest self-reflection. We would also like to offer a chance to talk through the ideas in the film and your work as a person confronting your own socialization and implicit bias.
13th is a powerful film that discusses the criminal system in America and how the prison system has been used to control, oppress, and criminalize minority populations. It discusses how the 13th Amendment was written to end slavery but has a loophole that was used by the white supremacist majority to create a penal system that would maintain the racial heirarchy.
We would like to suggest watching this eye-opening documentary with someone else you feel safe talking to about it (partner, partner teacher, PLT member, etc.) And we would like you to consider the cycle of socialization to reflect deeply about how we are each socialized. It is normal to be uncomfortable. Consider journaling about the film and the cognitive dissonance you might be feeling. For further development consider these questions questions for reflection.
Lastly, we'll be hosting two Zoom sessions to facilitate a conversation about these reflections. On Thursday, July 23, we will orchestrate a Zoom meeting from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and one for 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Once we get closer to that week, we will send out a Google Form to gather names of participants so we can organize smaller Zoom rooms within each session. So please find some focused time over the next few weeks to immerse yourself in this essential work!
Thank you for your time and and we look forward to Zooming with you soon.
Multicultural Committee
My guess is that its a dreadful movie that otherwise would not be watched.
This sounds like the crap we used to send out when doing Cable in the Classroom in the early 90s.
Home school bump!
Theyre forcing teachers to view this propaganda and participate in an online inservice on it? So glad Im no longer teaching, I could see our district doing something like this. Common core did me in. I couldnt in good conscious teach it.
I copied these from the text:
engage in honest self-reflection
We would also like to offer a chance to talk through the ideas in the film
with someone else you feel safe talking to about it
two Zoom sessions to facilitate a conversation
If I were confronted with this, I would PROVE to them they are liars, and have no interest in talking or facilitating any kind of conversation whatever!
I saw an interview with two young teachers yesterday.
The one short, pudgy one wearing a mask, told the interviewer, she did NOT teach the curriculum, but instead taught about today’s news, “you know, the protests and racial discrimination.”
If she had her mask off, she should have been identified and PROMPTLY FIRED.
Or become one of the ubiquitous, useless administrators.
Home school ping.
Translation: Watch it or else. Mandatory “struggle session” to follow.
They’ll pull the ol’ Delphi Trick on anyone who dares to disagree.
There’s a defense for the Delphi Trick, but it takes practice and perseverance.
Excellent point.
I'd be a lousy front man for such a defense - not so good at hiding my contempt for those types.
Again, excellent point - we're being manipulated into tyranny.
Do they think that they will attract anyone who is not basically already a libtard idiot to the teaching profession if they are forced to read and then teach propaganda like this commie crap? How is this treatment of teachers any different than something they’d pull in China?
For the record, there are many Conservative teachers with whom I teach. You'd be surprised at how many of us don't acquiesce to the Marxist gobbledygook.
If something was labelled "built by prison labor" I would skip it no matter how cheap, thinking its quality would be worse than the crappiest Chinese sweatshop.
Oh, get in touch with your FEEELLIINGS....
Journal about it.
Talk about it.
Gag.....
No wonder kids can’t learn to think for themselves. The teachers are treated with the same condescending, smarmy, superior to thou attitude by others and don’t know how to think for themselves. So they can’t teach others to do the same.
I refuse to “dialog” with idiots.
I wonder if the documentary also addresses the inherent sexism of our prison system. Did you know most people in prison for murder and rape are men???
