Never heard of Charles May until now.

Looks to me like May didn’t have the stomach to fight for the Union or the heart to fight for the CSA and thus hung up his spurs when he might have gone on to become a significant general on the side of his choice.
Being from Maryland has not been a great thing for a long time.
