I was lucky enough to see a fireball over S.E. Missouri maybe 10 or 15 years ago. It went slowly from west to east and was green with bits coming off of it. It was silent. It was 100 miles up, but looked like it was maybe 1000 feet up. Many who saw it thought it was an airplane on fire and search crews were sent out to look for a downed plane.

Well not easy. But the fact that one large enough asteroid can kill all life on the planet is pretty incredible
