Hail to the Washington, Douglass Commonwealth Redskins.
You mean the Barryton Reds.
(After Marion Barry)
Which part of the name is the issue? Washington or Redskins? Or is it both?
Unless they be broke back, of course.
But there is a twist!
The Seminole Tribe in Oklahoma protested and wanted the name changed. The Seminole Tribe in Florida told them clearly: "Forget about it"! The Florida Seminoles understood the respect Floridians have for the Seminole Tribe and its history. In the late 1800s Chief Oceola evaded and raided the Federal Government troops for years, hiding in the swamps and picking targeted strikes. They were the forerunners of what we call Special Forces. Eventually, disease forced them to surrender.
The University chose the Seminole - depicted by Oceola and his horse Renegade - as a symbol of a tenacious opponent. No serious sports team would pick a name depicting a bumbling fool. The choice was and remains a gesture of respect.
Let the perpetually offended pound sand!
