NM to step up mask enforcement, impose traveler quarantine

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said New Mexico will begin aggressively enforcing its mandate that people wear face masks in public settings — a necessity, she said, as the state hit the “grim milestone” of 500 deaths.

With infections surging throughout the state, she said, New Mexicans will face $100 fines if they don’t wear a mask. Businesses must require customers wear one.

The state, the governor said, will also impose a requirement that travelers into the state go into quarantine for 14 days, regardless of whether they arrive by plane or car.

She also reported three more deaths and 130 new cases, pushing the statewide death toll to 500.

She had harsh words for people who leave the house without a mask to eat, shop or meet friends. They are, she said, endangering other peoples’ lives.

Infections are surging throughout state, not just in one or two regions — a development Human Services Secretary David Scrase called “really, really concerning.”

Many of the new cases, he said, are in younger people. “We’re in a big surge in cases,” Scrase said.

Lujan Grisham has repeatedly pleaded with New Mexicans to wear masks to slow the spread of the disease. They are required in public settings, except when people are eating, drinking or exercising 6 feet away from other people.

The governor has also put on hold a plan to reopen more of the state economy. She has suggested New Mexico might even reimpose some restrictions that were relaxed in recent months if the situation doesn’t improve.

“It’s possible we roll back openings,” Lujan Grisham said.

But for now, she simply extended the emergency order that was already in place. It will run through July 15.

This is ridiculous. It will not help the public attain herd immunity.

But it will wreck the economy (and therefore, supposedly, hurt Trump).

They’ve had a mandatory mask wearing order for months now and they’re still seeing spikes. I’m wondering if illegals are getting and bringing it in. Or maybe the ,ask mandate isn’t working?

Next to the oil and gas industry (already in decline from both the virus and legislation to make the state fossil free in electric generation by 2045) tourism is the second biggest economic producer in the state. The state is rapidly becoming a feudal state with kings and queens at the top and peasants at the bottom struggling for survival and for handouts from the ruling and protected class.

Thanks for your targeted updates.

It’s still the United States and we can use State by State status reports.

“She also reported three more deaths and 130 new cases, pushing the statewide death toll to 500.”

In a state of about 2.4 million, those aren’t outrageous numbers - especially for a pandemic

Just how do they “impose” a 14 day quarantine? I’ll be driving through a small section of the state next month on vacation. I don’t intend to add two weeks to do it.

Don’t ever wear a mask!!! they can’t enforce it !!! they’re bad for you !!
and

they’re trying to get you to comply with your communist bull crap

Don’t ever wear a mask if you have to go in a store that requires one tie a bandanna around your neck and don’t put it over your face

This is the old west way

If some freaking Karen says to put it on pulled up to your chin smile Adam and then as soon as they walk away drop it

Governorlissima Lujan strikes again!!! Gotta kill off the already always tenuous NM economy for sure.

If Y’all don’t hear from me again it may be because I got arrested (or shot) for not wearing a mask.

Tourism is the bread and butter of this county-snowbirds staying in Winter, townies who own 2nd homes on the river and lake in the Summer, plus daytrippers with canoes and kayaks-we are not willing to starve like we did in the Obama years, so businesses are pretty much not caring if someone doesn’t wear a mask-and they’re not paying attention to the scowling Karens.

One side benefit of the mask fiasco shows real redneck ingenuity-with every woman in this rural area who has a sewing machine making cutesy-and useless-masks-you can get flowered ones, polkadot ones, cat and dog prints, bandana print, etc-they are selling them everyplace from the grocery store to all the tourist trap shops for $5 to $10 each depending on material and ornamentation-and every tourist who believes in Fauci’s BS is buying them up...
