Fred VanVleet expresses players’ quandary between playing, social justice
NBC Sports ^ | June 30, 2020 | Kurt Helin

There was a group of players — led by Kyrie Irving and Avery Bradley — who questioned if the NBA restart in Orlando would take the spotlight away and slow the momentum of the Black Lives Matter and social justice movements. It’s a legitimately difficult question to answer. Players struggled with that topic and discussed it amongst themselves. While most will still be going to Orlando for the restart, saying they want to use the league’s platform to spread the social justice message, the decision wasn’t come to lightly.

The obscene salaries paid to professional athletes is one of the prime examples of social injustice that we have. These players are frauds and hypocrites.

Keep politics off the field/courts. You have a problem then voice it when you’re not playing.

They have to play, for financial reasons. Drugs, whores, and criminal defense attorneys are expensive!

YES - they should simply stop playing basketball, cancel the entire season (and next one as well) and focus on promoting racial justice!

Please do it!

There was a group of players — led by Kyrie Irving and Avery Bradley — who questioned if the NBA restart in Orlando would take the spotlight away and slow the momentum of the Black Lives Matter and social justice movements.

Avery Bradley put his money where his mouth is - his son has respiratory issues so he decided he couldn't risk exposing his son to COVID-19 and has declined to play in the Orlando restart.

Other players can make the same choice - if they're concerned about social issues or about their health, no one is forcing them to play. They just need to give up their pay for the restart.

Their TV contract requires a minimum of 70 games played, otherwise there is a huge reduction is the amount paid to the NBA. I don’t see a way for the NBA to not play, unless a major star goes down with COVID-19 (not just test positive, but gets ill). As it is, the league is trying its damnedest to get LeBron another NBA title.

F’em....they suck anyway. The 80’s teams (Celtics, Lakers) would destroy the teams playing now.

I am a huge bball fan. It really depends on which rules the games would follow. If the 80s rules were played with, you might be right. If the modern rules were played with, I don’t agree with you. But we will never know and that is the fun of the debate.

They have rules today? When I’ve been forced to watch NBA when visiting someone recently, I never noticed any rules.

Yep....we will never know unfortunately. I don’t follow basketball much anymore....I did back in the 80’s. Can’t get much better with the match-up between Bird and Magic...that was some really good games to watch. What rule changes are you referring to? I thought they were pretty much the same.

But if the fan base disappears, who pays these inflated salaries?

Gladiators have one job, provide a spectacle for the masses. They are not political commentators. Not that they would have enough information one way or the other to have a valid opinion on most social controversies.
