The US Census has developed a ranking of “Community Resilience” by county. It is very interesting. It already confirms many things we know about America’s urban areas. It focuses mainly on health conditions of citizens and thus their ability to respond/survive natural disasters (or man-made disasters?). I think it could and should be broadened to include many other categories like dependence on government, stability of power and water supply, etc…
its an interesting concept and I’m interested to get FReepers’ thoughts.

it is of interest to me working with various fire services and evacuations for wildland fires. I would like to see the information lean in that direction, obviously but knowing how many people have multiple issues is helpful in determining when people should evacuate or be prepared to evacuate. Thanks for this.

Call me jaded, but I’ve yet to see the FedGov *do anything* that is not directly tied back to a rice bowl somewhere without being beat about the head and shoulders by CONgress.

You are correct, but for me and the groups I work with, the information is some support for which areas need to consider early evacuation more seriously than others. Not that it is news that if you are disabled or have other issues or multiple issues that you should consider bugging out long before a single able bodied 23 year old. Knowing that whole areas or counties are at greater risk or stress levels than others is useful in advising people on what to do. Even if you are able bodied recognizing that waiting late you may find the roads clogged with feeble individuals is helpful or even if you are a first responder headed in to realize that some counties will have a greater influx of certain types of people on the road may be useful. No. I do not think the government can do much to alleviate the condition of these people other than get out of their way by reducing regs.
