What we're seeing now is the result of the March to Academia that started in the 1970s and concluded in the 1990s.

The march began a long time before 1970, and it sure didn't conclude in the 1990s. Remember Joseph McCarthy? Well, after he was done with Hollywood, I have no doubt he would have gone after academia.

McCarthy didn’t take on Hollywood at all. He took on the Army and the State Department. The ‘60s radicals went to Academia after they saw Nixon’s 1972 blow out win. They realized they needed to shape a new generation from the inside.
