KURT COBAIN's Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal Sells For $9,000 (so much for a weak economy)

Kurt Cobain's Boss DS-1 distortion pedal sold for nearly $9,000 at Julien's Auctions' "Music Icons" event, which took place on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20, 2020 live in Beverly Hills and online at JuliensAuctions.com.

The orange Boss DS-1 pedal was used by Cobain on stage while performing with NIRVANA on the band's "Nevermind" tour at Club Babyhead in Providence, Rhode Island, on September 25, 1991. The pedal has red tape all over the bottom to secure it to the stage. It was accompanied by a signed letter of authenticity from Jeff Toste, an audience member, who states that Cobain was having technical problems during the show and smashed the pedal on stage, then threw it into the crowd. Toste was the recipient of the discarded pedal.

As previously reported, Cobain's guitar from NIRVANA's "MTV Unplugged" gig sold Saturday for a record $6 million.

The previous record was $3.95 million for a Black Stratocaster owned by PINK FLOYD's David Gilmour.

This wasn't any special pedal. And it STILL fetched nine grand.

Hold on a sec. ((Rummaging around in garage.)) I found Cobain’s Marshall amp he tossed into the crowd which bounced off my noggin.

It’s a collector’s item because of who owned it prior.

Even in a bad economy rich people are rich. And looking for places to beat inflation. Art and other collectibles fill that need for those who can afford such things, and depending on the item, anyone can invest this way. Some start with old baseball cards.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I,a child of the 60s...Beatles,Stones,Yardbirds,The Who,Hendrix...,think that Smells Like Teen Spirit is a near classic.

That one album produced by Butch Vig was pretty good. Everything else that band did was unlistenable.

Also, the talent in that band was Dave Grohl who went on to much greater success with Foo Fighters.

You're amongst friends. I thought Nirvana was the third best grunge band (Alice in Chains was my fav followed by STP though Soundgarden was good too). I liked their attitude and how they pretty much launched a genre with Teen Spirit. Grunge was way better then 80s synth and (for the most part) hair metal.

If you haven't seen/heard Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up, drop everything and click on the link NOW.

And I prefer Teen Spirit to most of Led Zeppelin IV.

I agree the "rich" are slightly insulated from bad things. But this is frothy bidding the likes of which I expect to see in 1989 or 2000 or 2019.

The fact that some punter bought one of Kurt's trashed stomp boxes from an insignificant show in Providence for nine grand, when 30MM people are unemployed today that had jobs 3 months ago, says (to me) the expectations of the economy are incredibly strong.
