My former neighbor was inter-racial, black man, white woman three kids, a great neighbor.

We live in a nice, safe, middle class neighborhood, 3/4 bedrooms, some in ground pools, with Doctors, only one dirt bag lawyer, some retired old farts {me and a coupla others} contractors etc.

The neighborhood has a single entrance, {not gated} and is a large circle with about 100 homes.

The reason my ex-neighbor was very welcome was that he was a good man, owned his own successful business and took care of his family.

When he moved he sold his house for about $400K and moved into a gated community where the houses started at $900,000 up to $1.5 M.

No one cares about his skin color.

No one cares about his skin color.

And that is the key point. Race is really less important nowadays.

Almost everyone is a mixed breed...."I'm half Irish and half Italian and my wife is 3/4 German, 1/8 Sioux and 1/8 Romanian." Unless you're in Hyannisport or a dog with papers, you're a mutt.

So any married couple inevitably has that kind of stuff to work through. "Honey, your grandmother just said it would be better for me to go away so you can marry someone who is Irish." It happens, but that doesn't get much airtime but it hits just the same.

With race, the differences are right there for societal analysis and feedback. "Dude, why are you dating HER?" Then they talk and find out "oh...she has a GUN?" Ding ding ding...we have a winner.

I'd also say are different today vs 30 years ago so most people don't freak out if say Johnny brings home Xulian.

But if Johnny brings home a white girl Mary who's tatted up with piercings and at Thanksgiving says "I refuse to eat your death flesh" I suspect Mom and Dad would have preferred Johnny had stuck with Xulian.
