The fired rookie cop who bailed out of jail on serious charges over George Floyd’s death managed to raise his $750,000 bond with the help of donations to a crowdfunding site, according to a report.

Thomas Lane, 37, posted cash bail Wednesday thanks in part to those who responded to an appeal decrying how high the bail was set, the Star Tribune said.

A couple of things. First, I'm skeptical that he did anything wrong to justify being arrested. Second, I think the bail was excessive. Third, according to the article, Lane is 37 years old, and he's a rookie. Generally, your rookie cops start at a much much younger age. So, I'm speculating here that it's not easy to get people to apply for the Minneapolis Police Department. And it goes without saying, it's going to get a lot tougher, even if the city council does not go through with firing all the officers on the force.

750k in a couple days?

IMO it may have been funded, but not by a crowd.

Smells more like some BIG money came in from somewhere

What could be worth that much money to someone or some group???

Pass the Reynolds wrap please

The lawyer wasn’t too clear on where the money came from. I think there was some big money too. Regardless, he should not have had such a high bail, and he should have been eligible for being released on his own recognizance. Hopefully, he will work to get the other officers released on bail.

If I remember correctly, there was also a report a few days ago that said this guy was hired despite having a criminal record.

No question about it -- big-city police departments must be having a really hard time getting even minimally qualified people to work for them.

His bail was ludicrous.

He’s no flight risk at all and was hardly involved. Rookie cop on his 4th day just going with the flow.

Is nothing more then a political prisoner and he just did an end run around an outrageous injustice...his arrest and absurdly high bail.

All perpetrated by the same preening filth who say no one should ever be held for cash bail.

A bail bond is 10% of the bail, so 75K, not 750K. However, whoever posts bond is liable for the full amount if the person does not show up for court.

[In October 2001, when Lane was 18, he was charged with two counts of obstructing legal process, damaging property, unlawful assembly, and disorderly conduct. He was convicted of one count of obstructing legal process and one charge of damaging property.

Almost six years later, in March 2007, Lane faced misdemeanor charges of hosting a noisy party or gathering and disorderly conduct. He was found guilty of the noisy-gathering charge.]

Compared to Floyd he was a saint. Also note that he was the rookie who questioned the actions of veteran officer Derek Chauvin. He should not have been charged.

Maybe you’re right and he shouldn’t have been charged. But I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here by saying that a 37 year-old with even a benign criminal record really has no business getting hired as a police officer.

The democrat controlled media deliberate miss portraying the six foot seven inch 200 plus pound Floyd as an innocent black who was being forceably restrained because he was black not because he was resisting arrest. When He was legitimately arrested for passing a counterfeit $20 dollar bill he was resisting arrest and was a threat if not secured. But the media was not mentioning his size or reporting that Floyd was removed from a squad car because he was acting up under the influence of drugs and also later was discovered to have COVID 19. Which suggests his physical condition may have led to his death which the media turned into a murder change and a charge of serious abuse by police because of police efforts that were tried to get him who under control. The results of politically induced miss reporting incidents where blacks have resisted legitimate arrest began to be used earlier during and after the post Zimmmerman trial, then on to the Ferguson episode. Obama’s abuse of the “Bully Pulpit” which seemed to promote resistance to legitimate arrest led to black gangs attacking non blacks found innocently traversing black neighborhoods and to a score of murders or life changing injuries and later attacks of theft and vandalism on local businesses as well as attacks and murders of police officers during that period.
If Obama had urged blacks to believe in the justice system and comply with the police would we be confronting his use of creating racial division now ?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

the $75K is “earned” by the bail bondsman if the guy shows up, right

if so, the 75k going down the drain is still a lot to swallow

... with even a benign criminal record really has no business getting hired as a police officer.

The are currently 700,000 police officers in the United States.

The U.S. has a population of 150,000,000 who within a qualifying age range (millenials, gen-x).

30% of adults have some type of criminal record.

18% do not have high school degree.

10% are drug users.

70% of the population are considered obese and would not qualify. This does not include other physical or mental ailments that may disqualify a candidate.

(Yes, I understand that these percentages are not mutually exclusive.)

1,400,000 are already enlisted in the military, which draws from the same qualifying pool.

You can see where I'm going with this. Recruitment is challenging so I can understand why they may relax certain qualifications. Especially when you factor in racial quotas, where liberals insist that criminal background checks are racist.
