My wife’s question: Which antioxidants work to restore these sleep-deprived critters? The article doesn’t say. I’d sure like to find something that simple that would help me keep going when I’m dog tired! But there are lots of antioxidants. Which ones work? Guess I’ll have to go look at the original papers.

Another study and more blah, blah, blah. As if humans never knew they need sleep to revitalize. Sheesh.

I think Selenium and some vitamins. But sometimes vitamins are toxic to certain people and worsen oxidation (G6PD).

Rogulja leaned over a tablet in her office, her close-cropped dark hair framing a face of elfin intensity

Sounds like a line from a novel.

Do we know what antioxidants were used?

I think I need to go eat about a kilo of vitamin C / resveratrol.

That is interesting. I’d think that both seizures (by cause) would also resemble a “cascade failure” electro-chemically.

The article did specify “fruit fly antioxidants” but the same could be functional for people.

Chemically, any antioxidant is just that but usefulness in vivo would depend upon the nature & structure of those *ROS’s.

I suggest looking into research that describes the biochemistry of patients with ailments that affect consciousness.

Target any ROS’s with the appropriate antioxidants.

* sadly, not Rodents Of unusual Size

The most powerful antioxidant currently is clove. It’s way ahead of just about anything else. You can buy a powdered form from health food suppliers. It’s important to get it sourced well as most cloves in grocery stores in the spice section have been irradiated to protect against fungus but which destroys all the properties you’re looking for. I’ve read about an extract from olive oil that is supposed to also be very good but I didn’t look for a source. There are some dangers associated with powdered clove use as well as many benefits. Just Google - there’s a ton of info on the web.

ROS==”reactive oxygen species”.

Yes but it’s more than “non diatomic “ oxygen, there’s probably a large(r) molecule on the other end with some phosphorus.

Yep, I could believe that judging from the way I feel when I’m really sleepy but have to stay up.

Speaking of which, I’ll bet the military is all over this research!

LOL! Also, sleep is a path to the collective unconscious and, I believe, to God.

“For in that sleep ... what dreams may come?” Shakespeare, I believe.

I’m now on my 4th or 5th straight night of 4 hours sleep; a killer work project, but I finished yesterday, and last night I was too wound up to sleep well.

Refresh my memory as to the identity of this wonderful phosphorus-bearing moiety you make reference to indirectly?

Is this cruelty to animals? Should I take a knee for the fruit flies?

FFLM!

Congrats on finishing, I hope it turned out as you planned.

My brain is hardly fresh but reducing ATP yields energy and phosphate. I have no idea if the focus is on things like hydroxyls. If it is, a list of antioxidants (to survive ingesting) can be made.
