Well, I think it is pretty clear he was interested in seeing how the animal would react, and was pretty funny in his commentary.

I didn’t know that squirrels could fall from nearly any height and survive, though I did see one on my morning commute one day walking on a powerline over a busy road, and it fell off, bounced off the asphalt a couple of cars in front of me, and darted off the road to live another day.

Funny. There is a section of road with rows of oak trees on either side, and it is a squirrel graveyard. The road is littered with corpses of dead squirrels.

When I saw this scene, I wondered if God had farmed out the programming of the squirrel road-crossing program to some lesser angel who was being given a last chance to produce.

He almost got it working, but still too often, the squirrel would get across the road free and clear, then suddenly turn and run right under the tires of a car.

Go figure.

I didn’t know that about squirrels until I knocked one out of a tree with a pellet gun. I calculated that he was around 30 feet off the ground when I missed him by about an inch low. He jumped a good foot up and out and I was smiling watching him free fall to the ground.

He bounced once and then took off running to another tree as I sat there stunned. I had to go look it up and sure enough they can survive falls of 40 to 50 feet.
