ACT-UP were the guys who pulled the stunt of disrupting mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. If I recall correctly, the line was that the Roman Catholic Church had blood on their hands for *not* distributing condoms unlike some other churches.
Not all of their antics were church related, but that should give you the flavor of what they were about. They were big on blocking entrances to places they said were somehow complicit in allowing AIDS to spread or not finding a cure.

Had someone "concern" me a couple of months ago about churches being attacked because they were "politicizing" something or other. This was a totally new thing. It had never been an issue before! He was so very very concerned.
I asked him if he remembered "ACT-UP".
He didn't have any idea what I was talking about.
