Created to disrupt through panic and fear. Not to destroy. The asymptomatic transferal is helpful in spreading the disease . A more virulent killer would have caused shutdowns much earlier. Limiting the effects and burning itself out. SARS did exactly that. This is easily spread. Kills just enough to cause a panic response that shuts down a nation’s economy, finance and those areas that would provide diversion from the fear, entertainment, sports, religion. It also overwhelms health care when it hits an area. Numbers approaching flu admissions hit hospitals in two months instead of six.

There is no evidence that the virus is a ‘bioweapon’ but there is circumstantial evidence that it came from a lab and maybe was even artificially altered.

it has already lost a lot of it’s “punch”

I am not sure that it has lost it's punch. I believe that in very tightly packed places people tend to get a high viral load on first contact. In places like where my wife and I live most people currently being infected get a much smaller dose and healthy immune systems can fight it off without the victim being aware of any symptoms. This is one possible benefit from “social distancing”.

I do not believe that the red Chinese or anyone else could have predicted the massive worldwide panic and over reaction this has created even in a US election year. If it is related to the lab, it would seem to be sloppiness and simple stupidity that caused it to get out.

...and there probably is that “dose/response” curve from the infectious “innocuous” to complicate things as well. As you can see this stuff is complicated as can be.

Agree completely. Trained epidemiologists would have a good understanding of this, but this does not seem to have been communicated very well to the public.

When I was at the grocery store the other day I saw my friend who is a supervisor for the TSA at SeaTac. I was that they were working with people from the CDC and that they had kept the number of infected employees to a minimum. They had a similar number of infections as we did on the fire department that I retired from and only one person who had developed any symptoms as well. Then I was scolded for wearing cloth gloves and told how they would not keep me completely safe from the virus and that they were probably cross contaminating everything that I touched with them.

I replied that I wasn’t trying to keep myself completely safe just to reduce the amount of virus that I was coming into contact with. Also that I was trained on how to handle gloves that we were wearing when taking samples of substances that we were analyzing with our mass spectrometer and other equipment and test kits. We used to practice with items contaminated with a fine powder that was visible under UV light to check how good we were at avoiding contaminating our samples and equipment.

The cloth gloves are washed frequently and the ability of the virus to live on dry cloth is probably limited as well. I have gotten in the habit of using disinfectant to clean my hands and keys when I get back to my vehicle. So despite my opinion that because of where we live I have most likely been exposed to this virus multiple times I still try to exercise some caution.

How about some behavioral data:

China absolutely freaked out when the virus magically appeared in the wild.

• Shut down a city of 11 million.
• Weld thousands into apartment buildings.
• Shut down manufacturing.
• In the absence of other industry steel mills running at full capacity (think being converted from melting steel to disposing of bodies).
• Moving 40 industrial incinerators to Wuhan 'to dispose of medical waste'.
• China Mobile reports 21,100,000 subscribers have dropped off the network. China requires its people to keep their cell phones with them and turned on.
• Forbid travel from the hot zone to anywhere else in China, while allowing travel to other countries.
Read that last one again.

They KNEW how dangerous this virus was, because they developed it! They tried to stop the spread within China, and did nothing to prevent its spread to the rest of the world!

That is an act of war against every country that had flights incoming from Wuhan.

Sounds good. SWMBO is beckoning. I may have some thoughts in the AM. “NBC Battlefield” stuff.

You have no arguments from me on that point.

What you learn in the military about the NBC Battlefield is as soon as you realize you are on one you immediately assume a defensive posture and start sending hourly reports in concerning environmental conditions and all agents detected. Headquarters starts putting alll that info together and issuing orders to respond. It’s exactly what we are doing now. Every urban center that has been attacked is surrounded with millions of “sensors”. People who for any reason can go get a “test”. The tests are the reports. So real time information with 10 digit grid coordinates can be known and responded to. I don’t think anyone has ever even seriously proposed something like this.

But there it is. Some states won’t need 1,000 tests a day, some counties, a thousand a day won’t be enough. But the test will perfectly match the demand. Because of the sensitivity of the “sensors”. It’s kind of ingenious.
