Some die-hard drivers say you arent really driving a car unless you are in a stick shift. But the manual transmission is dying out.
Just 41 out of the 327 new car models sold in the United States in 2020, or 13%, are offered with a manual transmission, according to data from Edmunds. That is a tremendous drop from less than a decade ago. In 2011, 37% percent came with manuals.

I own and drive two manual transmission cars. Which my SUV had a manual, but it was not an option.
Two automatic transmission ones here.
My wife’s Camry and defunct K5.
The Tacoma and jeeps, manual boxes.
I still drive a Ram 1500 stick.
I taught my daughter how to drive a stick shift and now that is her preference. Currently, she is looking for a new car as it seems like a good time to get a car with all the bargains out there. Something sporty, yet utile without the expensive name brand...
Try and find a new truck with manual transmission... impossible!
I like semi-automatics, control the shifting without the clutch. Paddles, too, like F1, but I drive an SUV...
And life goes on......
No longer have to use the horse and buggy except a religious sect or two.
I drive a company car. Wore out my personal car and got rid of it last year. 298,000 miles on the original clutch. That’s what finally broke.
Only one of my kids actually enjoys driving manual. He’s a trucker and just flat our loves to drive.
He’s out of work now due to Michigan governess and her twisted shutdown mentality but as soon as he gets back at it, he’ll be buying a Jeep with a manual.
As much as I like having a company car, I’m starting to get the urge for my own car again and want a manual trans.
I bought a new 2004 manual BMW 325i for a song. Seemed it was sitting on the lot for months, nobody wanted it. My 4th manual car. Currently I drive a Miata.
Hillary Clinton enthusiastically responds to the article until the title is clarified.
Oh, it does say DRIVE a stick, doesnt it. Never mind.
Only purists and specialty car owners prefer manuals. What with modern transmissions, the old idea that a stick shift gets better mileage is just wrong.
You want to take your sports car through the twisties? An automatic with paddle shifters adds quicker and faster turns.
And for 99% of daily driving.... a standard transmission is a handicap.
My first car was a stick ... as was 2nd and 3rd and then 5th. Long stretch between that one and my current stick ... 2006 Pontiac Solstice. What a fun little car!
Yo, what you know about going out?
Head wet Red Lex
I’m 72.
My mom bought me my first car, a Ford Mustang...first year it came out. I was 15 1/2 learning to drive, She got me a stick shift. Later I got the second Mustang for my second, a stick shift.
I have never owned an automatic transmission and I have trouble driving them. They try to make them so that kids can pretend they are changing gears.
I’m in the market for a new car ...hard to find another manual transmission...but I’m nit giving up til I find one.
My daughters best friend called me a few months ago. Her fiance was looking for a car and found a Ford Fusion with a five speed at a dealer.
The car sounded OK so I told her that only about 10% of car buyers want a stick and only about 2% of them want a sedan so I suggested a lowball price because the dealer really wanted to move that car.
They took the lowball and waived all their processing fees too.
Toyota may still offer a 6 speed manual.
Mine is a 16.
I might choose manual if given the choice. But the six-speed auto in my current ride is super nice.
And my Chevy/Alison automatic transmission is tough to beat.
I think that the automatics are way better than they used to be.
There are the memes a about the manual being the Millenial Anti-Theft Device.
Probably true. I will say that even though I learned how to drive with a stick I prefer the new computer controlled automatic transmissions.
Its Its mostly okay but now that I am a lot older sometimes the foot gives out or gets twisted easily. I can still drive an automatic with cruise control when that happens and if the drive is far I will probably be able to at least limp around by the time I get where I'm going.
Sadly, I stick to automatics now.
