Police with batons and guns have moved in to protect supermarkets on the Italian island of Sicily after reports of looting by locals who could no longer afford food.

The building sense of desperation reportedly boiled over on Thursday in Sicily, long one of Italy's least developed regions.

"We have no money to pay, we have to eat," someone reportedly shouted at the cashiers. In other Sicilian towns, small shops owners that are still allowed to stay open have been pressured by the locals to give them free food, Il Corriere della Sera said.

Sounds like people may have to support the Mafia again, so that they can restore order again.
A perineal problem with Italy is that they have to erect criminal empires to prune their corrupt governments with. Then they are able to reform the government to try and purge the criminal element. Always some point is reached where the government oppresses the citizenry instead and the cycle begins all over.

I have family in Sicily so this really concerns me.
It irritates me they call Sicily backward because it isn’t. It’s traditional with a long rich history somewhat separate from mainland Italy.
I heard on the radio today that the Mafia was distributing food in Sicily.

So they loot the markets, eat for a day or 2 then starve when they go looking again and find out the markets haven’t bothered to restock. Good plan if your life goal is to live one more week.

You are right. I was stationed there in the mid-70s and been back a few times. It’s a beautiful place with some very modern, classy cities and tons of history well worth studying. The people are warm and friendly, beautiful women (while young!), the food excellent, the ancient ruins are comparable to much of what you’d see in Greece or upper Italy. Heck, I took my family there and they loved it.
It's a toss up. Trump has been a voice crying out in the wilderness about China for decades. This has only made his voice louder, but there will be many who simply do not want to hear.

Did you notice the women hold their beauty well into their 50’s there? Must be all the vitamin D from the sun and natural non processed food diet.
I’ve been there 3 times. I’d love to see it one more time through more experience eyes. Probably won’t happen though.
