MANILA, Philippines — Some coronavirus disease (COVID-19) testing kits donated by China were not used because of the lack of its accuracy, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the testing kits only showed 40 percent accuracy compared to the testing kits from the World Health Organization (WHO)...

China gave 100 thousand test kits to the Philippines, but when they compared some to the test kits from the WHO, they found 40 percent were inaccurate.

By the way, Luzon (the main island) of the Philippines is in lockdown: no church, no gatherings, no cockfights (!), and you only can go out if you are shopping for food, medicine, etc. or going to the hospital. Lots of poor folks coming for help because they are out of work and are running out of rice...

but only one case in our town so far (but a couple deaths in old people: No more than the usual numbers, but still one does wonder)

My wife’s older cousin (who raised my wife as a teen) lives 300 ft. away from a lady Doctor in Cebu who died from COVID-19 a day or two ago. The victim’s husband, also a doctor, is also ill with the virus. They had hosted some sort of social function at what I guess we would call a reception hall that they own, a few weeks ago, and 35(?) people are under quarantine.

RP is going into their summer, now, so the hot temperatures should help, but, no news to you, many people live, work, and transport in very crowded conditions. (I thought my wife’s cousin’s neighborhood was packed, then we went through a “medium poor” part of Manila. Holy crap.) I’d guess, “advantage virus”.

I found a good article on what Philippines is facing. We think we have it tough?

You mean 60% were inaccurate. And that doesn't even include the ones that were inaccurate and just happened to be correct.

But hey, at least it's better than the 30% accuracy that China gave some other countries!

Compared to the WHO tests...which are themselves much less accurate than US tests.
