Germany is not planning to relax current restrictions on public life before April 20, Helge Braun, the head of Angela Merkel’s Chancellery, has told a national newspaper.

Braun made the comments just days after the country introduced sweeping nationwide measures in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19. This week, most food and entertainment outlets shut down, along with schools, universities and non-essential shops.

“We will not discuss any relaxing [of restrictions] until April 20, and until then, all measures will remain in place,” Braun told Der Tagesspiegel, adding that it should be clear after Easter whether the restrictions have slowed the spread of coronavirus. […]

Coronavirus infection rates in German are currently doubling every three to five days. The latest figures for the country from Johns Hopkins University show over 53,000 infected and 395 deaths. …

Yeah, the date made me laugh also. But I suspect it has more to do with the fact that April 20th is the first day after the Easter school vacation in most states.

Hitler goes to a psychic, and asks “When will I die?”

The psychic looks into his crystal ball and says, “You will die on a Jewish Holiday.”

Hitler responded, “Really? Which one?”

The psychic responded, “The day you die, it will be a Jewish holiday!”

I expect things to begin to return to normal as we approach Easter. I think most figure out that this is BS and I believe with the approach of nice and warmer spring weather folks are going to head outdoors regardless of what the powers that be dictate.

And the authorities cannot have the public blowing off their dictates.

Like in the states, the pols here have been driven by the panic induced by the media and magnified by social media. The crowd was “demanding” a solution so they got it.

The good that will come out of this will be that the people realize that not only can they not trust the organs of the state (public TV, radio) but also that social media is not always their friend.

I hope you are right. Although it is somewhat nice to work from my living room for a change, together with my wife who also has to work from home now, and my son who has to do his schoolwork online, I do have a nice office and would like to be able to return to it in the foreseeable future.

I am also beginning to miss the theater, opera, and other classical concerts…that’s just not the same thing if you do it online.

I also am looking forward to enjoying a good opera when all of this is over. Still, as far as sacrifices for the country go, not seeing an opera is hardly on the same level as storming the beaches at Normandy.
