Did a backpack trip in the Bob for years. Last time was solo since my backpacking buddy was going through a divorce and couldn’t make the trip.
Fishing was fantastic. But I saw so much bear sign I could hardly sleep. Haven’t been back since. Getting too old for backpacking anyway but the Bob is something to see. Perhaps by horseback next time.
I wouldn’t get that far. One look and I’d expire on the spot!
Great story,

Besides being
Highly Capable!
I always went into the BOB at the meadow brook trail head I did 6 trips.
As you stated the fishing with the right water conditions could be fantastic.
We were always armed woke up one morning with a big grizzly track 20 feet from the tent.
Know of two defensive shootings by other in the time we spent there.
I would like to do one more trip maybe a fully guided horse pack but they are expensive.
Horse packing fully guided is expensive but is probably the only way I’ll be going again. My backpacking solo days are over, simply too much risk in the wilderness to go it alone. I’m pretty picky about who I would go with as your life is in there hands when you are really out there. My old buddies just aren’t physically up to it anymore.
I took a boat from Sun Canyon Lodge over Gibson Resivour, saved 14 miles round trip of boot wear. Fished the North Fork of the Sun River. Best dry fly water I’ve fished here in Montana. Not the biggest fish. But the sheer quantity of fish, and the wildness of the location, made it the best for me.
But not the area go without backup. I was always armed, but the thought of something coming from behind me out of the willows, or coming through my tent, was too stressful ... especially with all the bear sign around. Multiple griz sightings by camps all around me. No attacks that trip while I was there but why push my luck?
