How Britain’s Insanely Risky Coronavirus Experiment Will Affect the U.S.
The Daily Beast via Yahoo ^ | March 14th, 2020 | Jamie Ross

LONDON—On Thursday, Boris Johnson delivered the most chilling warning from a British prime minister since Winston Churchill prepared the country for potential destruction during World War Two. “I must level with you,” Johnson said, looking like a man who had just emerged from a doctor’s office after receiving a terrible diagnosis. “Many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.”

His message was stark, and somehow seemed to hit even harder coming from a man who has built his political career on flippant clownery. The novel coronavirus can no longer be contained in the United Kingdom, he said, and all that can be done now is to mitigate the worst effects of it to give the doctors and nurses in the country’s already creaking national health service a fighting chance to save as many lives as possible.

But the strict containment measures now familiar around the planet—population lockdowns, prohibition of mass gatherings, and travel bans—were notable only by their absences. Johnson’s government has diverged with the rest of the world and decided to take a much less draconian approach, and his scientific advisers have admitted the strategy could see as much as 60 percent of the population catch the coronavirus.

In point of fact, Britain is effectively encouraging a potentially deadly virus to spread to the majority of the people who live here. Remember, the U.K. is one of the only European countries which is still allowed to send flights to the United States under President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

The logic goes like this: if a large section of the population is exposed to the coronavirus now, it will likely help people develop a level of immunity, and then Britain will be in the best possible position to defend itself from a...

This is a sane, rational approach to this virus.

Just let it burn through the population. Go about your daily lives as normally a possible.

Is it moral?

Is it political suicide?

“Is it political suicide? “

He’s probably worried that it will affect ‘Asian’ immigration numbers if he closes the borders.

Yes, let it work its way through the populace, while vaccines and treatments are still experimental or under development. Who cares if your parents or grandparents slam the NHS hospitals or die at home, like in Italy. /sarc

UK to be the first advanced country to just let the virus have its way.

Italy was the first. Without efforts to "flatten the curve," healthcare facilities get overrun. The UK labor unions today want the government to commandeer the few remaining private hospitals (8,000 beds) to fight the outbreak. That suggests they are going to follow in Italy's footsteps.

Hold on a second. I’ve been assured that CV is “the flu” by many, many people. So what gives?

This tactic does not make sense to me.

First, it’s not clear we get a true “immunity” to COVID.

Second, getting “all the deaths up front” still kills all the same numbers of a future reemergence, but simply front loads them such that hospitals will not be able to cover the massive single-time load.

This is not “based on science.”

I’m 60 years old.

I will isolate myself once cases occur in my area.

I will buy food about once every three weeks.

People over 50 or with an impaired immune system will need to go into self-isolation until an anti-coronavirus drug/vaccine becomes available.

The virus will spread and government measures will only delay its spread somewhat.

Improvised ventilators must be designed.

Hospitals won’t have enough standard ventilators.

Thanks for the heads up, Mariner!
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

I have a friend in the UK whose wife works in a doctors office so I know this to be true. They were told to go home, the office was closed, doors locked. He called his doctor which is in another town to find the same thing, no patients were being seen, no appointments accepted “during the delay period”.

Their theory is that NHS is trying to stop contact between medical staff and people with the virus now so they will not be sick themselves when the peak hits. A form of curve-flattening with NHS staff being isolated first.

“if a large section of the population is exposed to the coronavirus now, it will likely help people develop a level of immunity”

No, it only means “a large section of the population” will be infected. As a result many will get sick, many will die. There is no guarantee of anything, Boris is going with wishful thinking here.

Under 50 with a good immune system - will be like a cold

Over 50 or impaired immune system - potentially deadly

I have a very strong immune system, but I’ll still self-isolate since I’m over 50.

“A form of curve-flattening with NHS staff being isolated first.”

It may be a blessing not having all the information the world leaders do and not knowing what they know.
