Joe Coulombe, Founder of Popular Trader Joe’s Markets, Dies
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Saturday, February 29, 2020 | John Rogers

Joe Coulombe envisioned a new generation of young grocery shoppers emerging in the 1960s, one that wanted healthy, tasty, high-quality food they couldn’t find in most supermarkets and couldn’t afford to buy in the few high-end gourmet outlets.

So he found a new way to bring everything from a then-exotic snack food called granola to the California-produced wines that for flavor compared with anything from France. And he made shopping for them almost as much fun as sailing the high seas when he created Trader Joe’s, a quirky little grocery store filled with nautical themes and staffed not by managers and clerks but by “captains and mates.”

From the time he opened his first store in Pasadena, California, in 1967 until his death Friday at age 89, Coulombe watched his namesake business rise from a cult favorite of educated but underpaid young people — and a few hippies — to a retail giant with more than 500 outlets in over 40 states.

Why the #### not??

Do you speak well of hitler? Stalin?

Should we speak well of RBG when she dies, even though she delighted in the death of millions of babies?

#### her too when she dies.

Screw the bushes when they died. They were traitors all of them and I drank a great bottle of Wine on bush sr’s death day.

The day of the LOSER GENTLEMAN CONSERVATIVE are ####ing GONE!

Go work for George Will, anyone who wants those days back.

There’s a new sheriff in town and he doesn’t give a DAMN about speaking ill of WHOEVER DESERVES IT.

God bless him and may he win another 4 years

Rest in peace. I spent time with Mr. Trader Joe’s last year at the home. He was cheerful and super lively. Seemed like he wanted to take everyone at the home on a trip around the world.

Planned Parenthood? Not good. I’ll pray for the slim chance that he had an ounce of love for the Lord.

Trader Joe’s a popular around the world. The one in Berkeley is always fun to visit.

Double Amen to that.

Speak ill of him.

Speak very ill.

Trader Joes didn’t take off as a chain until Theo Albrecht (the Aldi guy) bought it and din’t make it out of California until after Joe left the company. It’s kind of like saying that Richard and Maurice McDonald started a hamburger dynasty without mentioning Ray Kroc.

I’ve never been that into Trader Joe’s, but I know people who are addicted to it.

Shopping in a Trader Joe's these days is not particularly fun. The check out folks are friendly and helpful, but the people that tend to shop there are pushy and the food selection has gone from eclectic to mostly whole foods light.

I believe that Trader Joe's is now owned by one of the German grocery chains (Aldis? or the other one)

(Aldis? or the other one)

The other one. But the other one is also called Aldi. Aldi Nord (North) owns Trader Joe's. Aldi Sud (South) operates the U.S. Aldi stores. The North/South split happened because one brother wanted to sell cigarettes in the stores while the other didn't.

I’ve been shopping Trader Joe’s since around 1972. I think it had alcohol, chocolate, cheese, and not a whole lot else at the start. But always an adventure. RIP, Joe!

Thanks for stating the blunt, unsweetened truth. Had it up to here with playing this stupid gentleman’s game while the other side uses street rules. If they want to play that game, let’s show them how the game is played.

"Planned Parenthood"

He used is vast fortune to subsidize evil. He probably regrets it right now.

Very true.

Like their store. Go in once a month or so. Wish they still carried Salmon Jerkey!

I used to love going to Trader Joes when we lived in America. 4 years ago we retired to Spain. They don’t have a Trader Joes but the do have Aldi, and every now and then we will go in and see TJ branded items stocked there. In America they are supposed to be big rivals but in reality it’s all in the family and families share.
