Regularly the obvious target for a suit might be the massive estate of the host who invited them to join him.

But not everybody is wired that way and to sue this family would make one Public Enemy #1—a substantial cost for some coin.

Suing Kobe’s estate...I don’t know about that. It may not be a popular move at all.

Unless Kobe knew or should have known that the pilot was not qualified to fly in those conditions there is no legal basis for a lawsuit against him.
