We’ve had two water mains break in front of our house in 16 years.
A big oak tree root caused them both times. They won’t cut down the damn tree, just keep replacing the line.................

Tree roots don't have brains; they don't know what's in the pipe unless it's leaking, and then the root(s) will invade the leaking pipe thru the failed male/female joint, hole or crack.
Otherwise, roots grow around the pipe, thinking it's a simple obstruction, like a rock or boulder. That's a standard Water Co excuse that the tree caused it. Ditto for sewage pipes.
