ICE rejects California law, arrests people at courthouse

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - U.S. immigration agents arrested two people at a Northern California courthouse, including a man detained in a hallway on his way to a hearing, flouting a new state law requiring a judicial warrant to make immigration arrests inside such facilities.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents made the arrests Tuesday at Sonoma County Superior Court, prompting an outcry from criminal justice and court officials who said the action undermines local authority and deters immigrants who are in the country illegally from participating in the U.S. justice system.

ICE said California’s law doesn’t supersede federal law and “will not govern the conduct of federal officers acting pursuant to duly-enacted laws passed by Congress that provide the authority to make administrative arrests of removable aliens inside the United States.”

"Our officers will not have their hands tied by sanctuary rules when enforcing immigration laws to remove criminal aliens from our communities,” David Jennings, ICE’s field office director in San Francisco, said in the statement.

“Prevents them from participating in legal process”

Umm, where to start?
How about:

If they aren’t here they wont have to “participate”
At all

They “participate “ frequently by killing Americans
Which most of us citizens would like to prevent
Sorta kinda like the fn justice system should
If it weren’t operated by liberals

This sounds like AG Barr is challenging California to either attempt to arrest an ICE agent for enforcing federal law or setting up a situation where ICE will need to arrest a California law enforcement/court official for interfering in an ICE arrest in order to set up a USSC case. I would love to see a California L/E attempt to make an arrest on an ICE agent.

“...deters immigrants who are in the country illegally from participating in the U.S. justice system.”

If they want to “participate” in the justice system all they have to do is commit crimes.

Starting with breaking and entering at the border...

Time to enforce the aiding and abetting laws...

And make the politicians liable for the crimes of illegals.

Actually the ICE agents are giving them an enhanced participation in the American judicial process. It’s allowing them to see the judicial process in ways American citizens never will. First city and county jail, then state prison, then federal prison then deportation. Process complete.

and deters immigrants who are in the country illegally from participating in the U.S. justice system.

Well, gns.

The only participation they should have is to reply
“Si, senor” when told to get on that bus back to Mehico.

. . . deters immigrants who are in the country illegally from participating in the U.S. justice system.

Nope. ICE is guaranteeing that these criminals will fully participate in the U.S. justice system - on the federal side, and on their way out. Deport all illegals. No exceptions.

I see some benefit in not arresting victims and witnesses but at least in the case that the article has details for, this guy was the perp and knowing the justice system, he would get a slap on the hand and be on his way. Plus 6he taxpayers would have to support him if he got any time. Now he is on his way back to Mexico. Win, win.

While I don’t approve of the “sanctuary city” nonsense, there is a reason for not arresting people at a courthouse.

If illegals become afraid to deal with law enforcement and the courts, then they become part of a subculture which is afraid to report crimes against them; or to be witnesses to crimes.

And that means, for some cities, a population of hundreds of thousands which is unwilling to step forward as witnesses. And that in turn makes for more crime, not less.

Following your logic, If they were really reporting crimes, wouldn’t they be turning themselves in?
