We live in interesting times. In an time when the most explicit pornography imaginable is freely available over the internet we somehow get all moralistic about dancers in skimpy outfits. When mainstream movies and cable TV contain language and sex scenes that are as close to the line of pornography as they can get its hard to understand the outrage over JLos butt shaking. Does anyone remember Paris in 1890 with the popularity of the can-can. Or the sexual energy expressed by Rita Moreno and the other cast in West Side Story? Its a matter of degree, not kind.
The evolutionary struggle that we are going through is profound as well as somewhat amusing. Women have achieved enormous success in almost all aspects of business, law, entertainment, medicine, and politics. Yet, despite this success they continue to be valued on their physical attributes for sexual attractiveness. It should not be an either/or choice. Women and men can celebrate their intellectual achievements without being afraid of the enormous power of human sexuality especially women’s unique qualities that have moved civilizations since time immemorial.
The collapse of Victoria’s Secret sales because of their vague corporate ties to Jeffery Epstein show’s how the sentiments of women can change quickly when they feel at risk. But we shouldn’t pretend that this dynamic between men and women is not part of the joy of life and celebrate its good qualities without rejecting the power games that men (and women) play around it.
Anyone who is uncomfortable with what’s on their TV is free to change channels or turn it off. Just don’t try to keep the people that don’t have a problem with it from having their fun. And thanks for those great GIFs from the show.
