“Favorite player” nowadays is somewhat of an oxymoron in my mind as the VAST majority are pompous, self righteous, insufferable loudmouths.
A few are what we used to call “role models” but that list is extremely short.
I’m sorry when any tragedy occurs to anyone but will save my heartfelt eulogies for the very few left in the sports world that are worthy of them.
I’m not a basketball fan so I just don’t get it. I was watching Fox News Sunday hoping to see the panel’s comments on the Iowa caucuses. Instead, they broke in with lengthy coverage of this guy’s death. Every known detail was covered including details about his divorce. It went on and on and on as if he were some kind of saint. He was even described as of the stature in basketball to be on Mt. Rushmore. Please! Frankly, I couldn’t care less. This country is obsessed with celebrities, including sports celebrities.
It’s a truly sad commentary on the state of our culture and our country that some guy who made a living running up and down a court throwing a ball into a basket gets this much attention when he dies. As I said, who cares?
