In Japan the new trend for single seniors facing a lonely and unaffordable time during those golden years is prison. Women especially the ones without family will commit non violent crimes inorder to be caught and sent to prison.

My daughter lives in Tokyo and told me about one such senior on a television series. When the weather was warm, he mostly hung around a rural police station doing handyman work and errands in exchange for a cot in one of the unused cells at night. Think of Otis and the Mayberry jail on the old Andy Griffin show.

By law, the jail could only keep him 30 days at a time, so he had enough money to buy a bus ticket to a hot springs resort where he could break it up for a day or two before retuning "home."

The higher ups at the district Po-Po caught on to the scheme and told the locals he would have to make other arrangements before the winter set in. So the old guy made friends with a local cabbie, bought them both rooms at the resort, then arranged a cab ride back which he couldn't pay for. So the cabbie delivered him to the local lock-up where he could now legally stay until spring because he was serving time for a crime.
