GPS JAMMING EXPECTED IN SOUTHEAST DURING MILITARY EXERCISE
APOA ^ | January 14, 2020 | Dan Namowitz

Posted on 01/18/2020 8:03:33 AM PST by CodeToad

GPS reception may be unavailable or unreliable over a large portion of the southeastern states and the Caribbean during offshore military exercises scheduled between January 16 and 24.

The FAA has posted a flight advisory for the exercises that will require jamming of GPS signals for periods of several hours each day of the event. Navigation guidance, ADS-B, and other services associated with GPS could be affected for up to 400 nautical miles at Flight Level 400, down to a radius of 180 nm at 50 feet above the ground.

The flight advisory encourages pilots to report any GPS anomalies they encounter. Reports may be submitted using this online form. AOPA reported on a similar event in the southeastern United States in 2019.

AOPA is aware of hundreds of reports of interference to aircraft during events around the country for which notices to airmen were issued, and we consider the risks to GA aircraft highly concerning.

Which, conveniently, coincides with pro-gun demonstrations in Richmond. . .

Does this effect ground traffic cars/trucks?

Thank you, so many ground vehicles are being hardwired with GPS capability

The article says down to 50 feet in some places, but higher in other, so it might not jam ground vehicles.

Oh jeez, it’s going to look like some cheap sci-fi rapture scene with SUV’s careening more out of control than usual because soccer moms lost their driving brains.

How’s that any different than what we already have with soccer moms driving into lakes because their GPS said to?

Add to the pantheon of really really stupid ideas. Why didn’t they schedule this to take place in Iran (for example)?

Looking forward to the headline: Florida Man driving home from work ends up in Peoria after military exercise jams GPS.

Why would they do this over populated areas at all anyhow?

I agree, this very well could have been done at sea away from populated areas.

Good to see that our military has FINALLY figured out that their gamins won’t work all that well, at least against certain countries.

That’s probably where they got the idea from (considering how soon after our attack this is taking place). We went to give Iran a black eye, Iran turned on their jammers, and our pilots quickly realized that the contractor soy-boys who promised them that ‘GPS is the new paradigm’ and nothing else was needed, were full of crap.

We are on a mooring ball in Titusville and have been running an anchor alarm, because the lines sometimes fail. We did notice a few gaps in the GPS on Thursday, but, it just made the error go to about 45 or 50 ft and almost immediately straightened out.

Would have probably been ok while in the ICW around here as it’s all canal.
