You do realize the Japanese military and civilians were determined to fight to the last person when the allied invasion of Japan came?
Every civilian was expected to sell their lives in order to defend the homeland. School children were practicing with spears and bamboo staffs.
Truman approved the use of the two existing bombs because he had seen the estimates of allied casualties in the case of invasion. It was estimated that millions of casualties would result from direct invasion. More casualties than had been suffered in Europe and the Pacific, combined.
Even after Fat Man and Little Boy were dropped the consensus amongst the Japanese advisors to the Emporer were to keep fighting. Fortunately a small group of civilian advisors appealed to the Emporer and he overruled the military and ordered the surrender.
Only the direct intervention of Emporer Hirohito ended the war without another ocean of blood being spilt.
