Hard for me to care. The Oscars are beyond ridiculous. Snubbing just means that people did not make the cut of rigging the system in their favor. People vote who never watch the films. Many are in elderly homes. It just doesn’t matter. If you want to be a star then sleep with a director or a producer. If you want to be a producer come with a lot of money. Oscar winners are the people who rigged the votes.
Leaving politics aside (which ideally is the way it should be), DeNiro was, IMO, terrible in The Irishman. He’s this 75-year-old, slow-moving geezer with hunched shoulders who we’re supposed to believe, in certain parts of the movie, as a 30-40 year-old thug who’s roughing people up. It was ridiculous. He was fine as the convalescent-home version of the character but all the Hollywood technology in the world can’t take away the absurdity of a decrepit old man cast in the role of a young hoodlum.
Murphy was great in “Dolemite Is My Name”, and I think years ago he was snubbed for “Dreamgirls”, too.
It’s too bad, because a really good project DOES show off his acting chops. He’s good.
The prejudice against “comedians” being nominated for acting awards still exists. Robin Williams escaped it, but not everyone does.
Yes I have personally heard good things about Jennifer Lopezs performance.
DeNiro was pretty lousy in the Irishman and a pretty week script.
DeNiro not being nominated was one of the few things that Hollywood has gotten right. He was terrible The Irishfellas
He could barely get his leg up to kick the guy in the store. He was completely unbelievable and walked through the role.
Laugh if you want, but Jennifer Lopez is a better actress than she is anything else, and better than most who get nominated.
I don’t know anyone who has seen Eddie Murphy’s new movie
Dolemite. Have any of you FR posters seen this movie?
I don’t know if it’s Netflix only.
It is Netflix only, but it had a limited theater release to qualify for the Oscars. It was great, and he was great in it. I’m biased because I’m a big fan of that self-made B-movie stuff.
Rudy Ray Moore was a B-Movie legend who was a self-made success story who wouldn’t take no for an answer until he was a success. Inspiring, really. More guts, drive and perseverance than talent, but that’s why he was a legend of the genre.
I agree.
See #13.
I didn’t exactly think he looked 75, but he did look odd. Aside from the de-aging, the performance wasn’t that great. He acted completely mild mannered like a simple friendly guy, then he’d occasionally shoot somebody and go right back to being amiable. It was a very strange characterization.
I can understand Scorcese wanting these guys in a movie, but making them younger made the movie an oddity, not a masterpiece.
I’m glad Eddie found a good script, but I’m surprised I didn’t hear or see much of anything about it.
Maybe that’s how it is today.
Market saturation.
I didn’t see the movie but am very glad that DeNiro was snubbed, which translates into ‘little or no’ influence. He was, at one time, my favorite actor. He was outstanding in Heat and Casino (and other films but those 2 are my favorite) but I can’t even watch those now without contempt..
Mock me if you want, Adam Sandler was unnecessarily snub for a great performance as a compulsive gambler in Uncut Gems. Its the Adam Sandler movie for people like me who hate Adam Sandler movies.
