Joker, the controversial drama about the mentally ill Batman villain that sparked backlash with its realistic depictions of extreme violence, triumphed at the 92nd annual Academy Awards nominations on Monday morning, earning 11 nods, the most of any film.
Three films were close behind with 10 nominations: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantinos fictional ode to 1960s Hollywood; The Irishman, Martin Scorseses mob drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci that clocks in at three and a half hours; and 1917, the World War I epic that centers on two British soldiers on a dangerous trip to deliver a critical message that could save 1,600 troops.

The Oscars lost me a very long time ago. Star Wars lost to Annie Hall. ‘nuff said.
Never saw it. Won’t rent it or stream it. Doesn’t attract my interest.
What makes not getting a nomination a snub?
I think Once Upon A Time in Hollywood will win Best Picture.
Greta Thunberg was also snubbed. She should have been a shoo-in for Best Child Actress in a Propaganda Role.
“Greta Gerwigs version of Louisa May Alcotts tale of four sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the Civil War”
I wonder if the perceived snub has anything to do with taking a classic and trying to fit the narrative into the 21st Century? From the little that I know about that former time, women didn’t talk like the movie portrays their dialogue, and men simply didn’t engage women like the movie shows.

I haven’t watched the Oscars in decades. I’m still pissed that Smokey and The Bandit didn’t get best picture.
Hollywood is a joke so it makes sense a joke of a movie would lead.
I wonder who will get the Best Trash in Cinematic Form Oscar? I guess it could be like a participation trophy with everyone getting one. It’s only fair. Right?

Exactly!
RE: I wonder if the Academy nominated “Joker” just to get eyeballs for the ceremony.
That aside, I think Joaquin Phoenix is a sure lock to win best actor.
The rest are up for grabs.
Once when I had to attend a medical convention that was held at Opryland in Nashville--I had a headache the entire time I was there--I was struck by the similarity between the Opryland shows and the Academy Awards shows. The Opryland shows were not as tacky and vulgar as the Academy Awards shows; they were less pretentious and more intelligent. Otherwise, they were very much alike.
It is obviously best of all the above. I also liked Midway and Ford vs Ferrari. Latest Star Wars is trash.
AOC hanging on to the chain link fence just like the Sarah Conner Dream sequence in Terminator 2, except for the Nuclear Fireball that is.
I saw both Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joker at the theater.
I think Joker is unquestionably the best film of the year and Once Upon a Time was silly, at best.
But like all Tarantino films, the cinematography was superior.
