While raising my 4 children I always challenged them to support their beliefs especially if they were beliefs I held. I would always take the opposing view and made them work at supporting their positions.

As adults they thank me often for teaching them to debate. While growing up they often complained that they know and can argue the liberal views better than their liberal classmates.

Youth rebels. That is the normal, human situation.

Liberalism has become the tyranny which the intelligent youth of today rebel against. The pendulum is swinging back toward the right.

Great post.

I had a high school history teacher who was also the local Democratic precinct committeeman. He didn’t hide his political views, but he also clearly separated what were essential facts and dates versus what was his personal opinion.

Once we had an exam that covered the depression era and one question read something like: “Describe the key programs of the New Deal, and give your opinion on whether it was a success or failure. Justify your answer with at least four examples.” I took the easy route, wrote that the New Deal was a success, and listed four examples straight from his lecture. When I got the exam back, I received an ‘A’ but the problem was circled with a note to see the teacher after class.

When I went to see him, he said immediately “I know you don’t believe a word of what you wrote here. You could have easily listed four examples of New Deal programs that failed. I’m a little hurt that you thought I’d give you a better grade for my opinion than for yours.”

My respect for that teacher skyrocketed. He passed away a few years ago, and the world is poorer without him.

I discovered that being in the military prepares you - at least it did me - in how to argue your point in a logical manner. Mainly because, the vast majority of the time when you are on duty, it is boring as all get out. You end up in many discussions and - at least I - learned how to better present my beliefs.

I also found out that there are college instructors who do not like students in the classroom who have been out in the world, cannot easily be bulled, and can see through their BS.
