Agreed. Some HF stuff isn’t worth the money - you’re better off spending a little more and getting something that will get the job done without breaking and possibly injuring you. Some of their stuff however is perfectly suitable for casual use. I have a few things from HF, I’ve also got old school Craftsman stuff from my father and uncle. Heck, I’ve even broken a craftsman socket! Ok, I did have a breaker bar on it that lived up to its name...

Had one blow up in my hand (first use) when measuring voltage on an Outdoor Condensing unit. 240 volts. Thankfully it blew out of my hand but did leave it blackened though. Woke me up better than a big cup of coffee.
Doesn’t pay to play with garbage in a situation like this.

I’ve had a fair amount of success with HF stuff.
One 10 dollar drill died out of the box.
HF has a definite place in tool purchases and the quality of their tools varies in the price you pay. There are many times when I had to do a job and it required a toll that I would normally never use again so I would hit HF for an inexpensive version and it always got me through.
I broke two Craftsman breaker bars, one the new free replacement, removing track bolts from a bulldozer. I was NOT using a’helper’. I borrowed an oldy, but beefier one from a friend, and completed the job. I haven’t bought a new Craftsman tool since.
As much as I like Harbor Freight, if I was going to steal $1,000 worth of tools, I’d steal Stanley, Dewalt, Craftsman, Husky or Kobalt. Some of HF’s tools are good, but try using them in construction...
When I broke the socket it was really my fault. I was trying to get a rusted nut off a seat mount in a Jeep. I had a 6 pt deep socket handy, and put the breaker bar on that. I’m reasonably certain if I had bothered to get a regular/short socket the sidewall would not have split. I ended up using an impact rated socket and impact wrench to jar it loose after a good soaking with penetrating oil. It is a poor craftsman who blames his tools - I don’t blame the socket, that was definitely mechanic error. ;-(
guy was stupid to do this in chicago ... should have done it anywhere in california and taken slightly less than $1,000.00 and they wouldn’t even bother to turn him in ... just maybe ask him politely to please shoplift in some other store next time ...
That's probably what he stole. Might be worth $1K.
First: $1000 isnt what it used to be.
Second: There are items that ARE quite expensive and small to be secreted on the person

I use those HF impact sockets a lot at times. They have stood up to plenty of rusted AMC and Willys jeep bolts.
My typical impact combo is a DeWalt impact driver and HF extensions and sockets.
Yesterday I bought a tail-gator generator from there. I need portable juice for a few small jobs. In my case, I don’t have any of that “help” stuff. One man band here. There is only so much I can sensibly lug around.
I cranked it up today and it started after a couple of pulls. Not too loud. A tad quieter than the typical chainsaw.
It ran for a bit and I shut it off. A couple of hours ago I ran it again with DeWalt die grinder. That grinder put a noticeable load but ran OK. Tomorrow I plan on finishing the cutting job. A couple of body bolts to whack. Then the tub should lift up up and away a few feet.
A torch where this is being done really isn’t practical. Plus I haven’t used one in decades.
Yeah - a good drill press needs to be built solid like a mill if accuracy is a requirement.
And with a cheaper drill press, a center punch can help a bit.
I took a chance on one of those HF Tail-gator generators since it was portable.
Over a week and I’ve run almost a tank through it. Usually it runs about 90 minutes to 2 hours on the long runs
So far, so good. The amps restrict a lot of what I could use but it handles the die grinder very well. A side-grinder is a bit too coarse for the things I’m doing.
