It doesn't help PCs in most cases. The memory that holds the bootloader and BIOS is rated to last about 20 years. The SDRAM of main memory looses everything once the PC is powered down. It is also a charge based memory that will begin to fail after time. True SRAM is used only in microcontrollers; however, they also depend on charge based storage for their software.
Only the "plated wire" read-only memories used in computers of the Apollo era were truly long lasting. Voyager software is in such memory.
