My husband and grew up in the 1950's and are trying to remember the name of a health product that was given like peanut butter, on a spoon, usually at night.

It might have contained carob but looked like chocolate, was smooth and slightly greasy. Our entire family of boomers is trying to remember what it was and can't figure it out.

If you are a boomer and remember this product, please clue us in.

It was in a brown glass jar and wasn’t castor oil or Vitalin.

You’re not talking about Paragoric (spelling???)

My mom fed us that whenever we had a cold or cough. I think it was by prescription, though. It made us sleepy.

The only health fad from that era I recall is Metrecal. But it didn’t come in a bottle as I remember.

In the '40s & '50s. we had a vitamin supplement in a brown glass jar, but I remember it as something more like a "souped-up molasses" -- dark brown, very thick & sweet. For some reason, the name, "Multicebrin" comes to mind...

It might be a regional product. After all, those of us in Indiana didn’t have Dr. Pepper. So it might be helpfully to tell us the locale.

...But, the name , "Metrecal" may be it. I remember taking both "Metrecal" and "Multicebrin" -- but, I don't recall what name matched the dark brown stuff...

No Dr. Pepper in Indianapolis. We would drink it when we visited my aunt in Memphis.

Hadacol

We used to joke, why do they call Hadacol, Hadacol?

They had to call it something.

Not sure what you are talking about. In the 50s, I was given cod liver oil —ugh—nasty stuff.

Also a brown syrupy stuff called syrup of pepsin—granny would say you need a good physic—and out would come that nasty tasting stuff. Yuk.
