MANILA (Reuters) - At least 11 people have been killed and more than 300 treated in hospital after drinking coconut wine in the Philippines, including some who were celebrating at a Christmas party, health and local authorities said on Monday.
The poisoning occurred in Laguna and Quezon, two provinces south of Manila, and all had consumed lambanog, a drink popular in provinces and consumed widely during holidays and celebrations.
Many were admitted to hospitals on the urging of mayor Vener Munoz in Rizal, Laguna, where the deaths occurred between Thursday and Sunday.

Horrible
DANG!
Boy i’ll never forget the time i got deathly sick drinking coconut wine in the Philippines.
Or was it moonshine in the basement?
Either way, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Coconut wine?? Sounds like nasty stuff to me.
apparently they’re not actually drinking real coconut wine, but instead drinking some kind of poisonous concoction made from deadly methanol ...
[Del Rosario, a doctor, said one of the by-products of coconut wine fermentation was methanol, which can cause blindness and death. Some manufacturers keep the methanol in, because it means greater volume and more profit, he added.]
And it's still popular this year.
Methanol ain't ethanol.

I wonder if our favorite anti-America fried/zotted ex-FReeper, Alex W, had any. He probably made his ‘washing machine’ wifey try it out first! WOOF Dawgs!
Terrorists? Poisoning a big batch?
I didn’t know that about Methanol.
I’m sorry to hear about the 11 dead and other made ill.
I have good memories of my short experience in Manila and Clark Naval Base years ago. They were such hard and organized workers. At least the ones I saw.
This was near the time (1984) Margaret Thatcher and Zhao Ziyang negotiated a plan to hand Hong Kong back to China after that 99 year lease ran out in 1997.
There was much excitement and much worry among the merchants in downtown Hong Kong. A HUGE area of downtown.

[The concentration of methanol vs ethanol in any liquor is such that by the time you reach a lethal dose of methanol the ethanol killed you a few times over. Vast major of the stories of people going blind and whatnot are from criminal entities saving money by diluting with legal methanol so it appears they still have a strong product.]
It may start out as palm wine, but Lambanog isn’t a wine. It’s an 80+ proof liquor distilled from palm wine. Basically, Pinoy moonshine. Some of it might be good, but not what I tried.
How horrible. They forgot the lime to add to the coconut
Drink em both togetter.
This is why experienced moonshiners throw away the first cut. When distilling a liquid that contains a combination of ethanol and methanol, the majority of the methanol distills out first since it has a lower boiling point.
Lived in the Philippines for 9 years. Never once tried this dreg.
In other regions they call this stuff Tuba. Manila and the surrounding areas are like any other large city. Filled with con artists and scumbags.
Self preservation and situational awareness is crucial to survival. Anything less, whether you’re a native or a visitor is dangerously foolish.
BTW, just because someone may be a friend or relative does not change the above advice. In fact, it should enhance ones awareness,
Cynical? Perhaps. But, cynicism has served many a old man very well.
