Had she read the contract and said, "Thanks but no thanks. I'll publish my own music." she might've been the next Ani DiFranco. Forty nine years old, 20 albums, and a net worth of $10 million. Maybe. If she was very, very lucky. Or she might've instead gone off to Ivy League, joined a sorority, graduated with a Mrs. Degree and married a hedge fund investor like all of her gentry class friends did.
But you can guarantee that if she had said no to that contract, she would not have become one of the biggest entertainers in the history of pop music.
That's the kafkaesque predicament she's found herself in. The contract that would make her famous would be the same contract that would eventually cause her to lose the rights to her songs.

Paul McCartney has the same issue. He and the rest of the Beatles sold their songs early in their career. In doing so they were promoted far above other groups because their production company was making so much money off the songs. They would never have gotten that early promotion without selling their songs. Paul has never been able to buy those songs back. Not because they haven’t been for sale. But because the price is very high, and he doesn’t want to pay the price.
Taylor is the same. She is not that much more talented than most of the other current artists. But she has been highly promoted because she sold her song masters to her production company. That’s why she does so many concerts. She makes her wealth on the concerts and the song writer’s royalties. But she doesn’t get payed for the masters when they are played on radio or streamed. She can always offer to buy them. But the production company has a right to say no until she makes an offer that they want. Taylor and her very savvy parents always knew the deal and benefited hugely from the deal. But now she wants out. Sorry, Taylor, you have been paid. If you want your songs, you will have to pay a lot for them.
It is my understanding that she receives royalties through ASCAP every time one of her songs are played.
It’s about publishing rights and literal control. She is only barely less wealthy because of this. And Sir Paul is not going hungry any day, unless he wants to.

I used to be fascinated at how often Heinlein got recycled in literature (Like in King’s Dark Tower) but then came Hubbard who stole scads of RAH’s satire and turned it into Scientology. Anyone who hates Soros can’t be an anti-semite. He’s pure blood nazi who happens to have been born a Jew.
Her parents are Christians and maybe she is too. I don’t see her as ridiculing Christians. She is only trying to support LGBTQ rights. Like everyone else in her generation. Can you imagine how many people in her industry and employ and friend circle are not 100% heterosexual? It makes perfect sense. Not all Christians are out fighting people who are different. She only mocked those who do.
